Chapter 16 - THE PROSECUTOR AT THE AIRFIELD

Assistant U.S. Attorney Richard Hale denied releasing the airfield.

Property records proved his credentials had authorized it.

Unlike the earlier digital forgeries, this transaction required a biometric scan at a federal terminal. Security footage showed Hale placing his own hand on the reader.

Dominic had bought the prosecutor years earlier.

Hale controlled the agents assigned to Clara, the evidence against Maximilian, and the official response to Julian’s abduction. Every safe location had flowed through him.

Leah bypassed the task force and contacted the Justice Department’s inspector general. Adrian reached an independent state-police unit. They could not act openly without warning Hale.

Clara insisted on answering Dominic’s demand.

“No,” Maximilian said.

“He is my husband.”

“And you are carrying his child.”

“That is not a reason to make the choice for me.”

Maximilian stopped. Months earlier, he would have issued an order and called it protection. He unfolded a map instead.

“Then we plan together.”

Clara would wear a microphone undetectable by the airfield’s old scanners. Leah would hold the original ring until visual confirmation of Julian. Clara carried a replica. Maximilian would bring his own signet to satisfy Dominic’s expectation.

Mrs. Gable volunteered to drive the catering van used as cover. No one pretended this erased her treatment of Clara. Trust returned as work, not sentiment.

Before leaving, Clara recorded a message for her unborn son.

She paused several times because she did not want the message to sound like farewell. Fear kept turning every sentence into one.

Maximilian offered to stop the plan. Clara shook her head.

“All my life, rich men have told me danger means I should wait somewhere quiet while they decide what happens to me. Julian did it when he hid his name. Dominic did it through threats. You did it the first night.”

“I was trying to protect you.”

“I know. Protection without choice is only a kinder room with a lock.”

Maximilian accepted the distinction, even though it meant watching her walk toward the airfield.

“Your father tried to tell the truth when everyone around him was paid to prefer a lie,” she said. “If I do not come back, do not let anyone turn that courage into a family myth. He was afraid. He made mistakes. He chose you before he knew you existed.”

Maximilian waited outside the room.

“And what should I tell him about you?” he asked when she finished.

“That I was terrified.”

“Anything else?”

“That I went anyway.”

At the airfield, sleet crossed the runway in silver lines. A charter plane waited with engines running. Dominic stood near the stairs. Prosecutor Hale was beside him holding a federal radio.

Julian sat in a wheelchair between two men.

He looked toward Clara.

Recognition came slowly, painfully—and then completely enough to fill his eyes with tears.

“You kept the ring,” he whispered.

Clara took one step forward.

Hale raised his weapon. “Take off the chain.”

The independent agents listening from beyond the perimeter heard every word.

Then Hale touched his earpiece and smiled.

“Your backup has been intercepted,” he said. “You came alone after all.”
