Chapter 17 - THE TWO RINGS

Dominic demanded both signets.

Maximilian removed his ring and placed it on the hood of a black car. Clara showed the replica around her neck.

Dominic recognized the false weight immediately.

“Do you think I never held my nephew’s hand?”

He ordered one of his men to wheel Julian toward the plane.

Clara tore the replica free. “Wait.”

Leah stepped from the catering van holding the real ring inside a clear pouch. Prosecutor Hale aimed at her.

“You were told to remain outside this,” he said.

“You were told to uphold the law,” Leah replied. “We are both disappointing someone tonight.”

She tossed the pouch onto the wet pavement between them.

Dominic retrieved both rings and inserted them into a portable reader. The escrow account opened.

Fourteen million dollars appeared on-screen.

“Transfer it,” he ordered Clara.

The account required a third authorization: the numerical sequence concealed in the ultrasound border.

Clara entered it.

The screen displayed TRANSFER COMPLETE.

Dominic smiled.

Then phones began ringing across the runway.

The money had not moved to his account. Julian designed the third key to release the complete ledger simultaneously to federal inspectors, international banks, journalists, and every victim’s attorney listed in the files. The funds transferred into a court-controlled restitution account.

The rings had never opened an escape route.

They opened the evidence.

Hale grabbed Clara. Maximilian moved forward, but Dominic pressed a weapon against Julian’s shoulder.

“Choose,” Dominic said. “The maid or your brother.”

The insult revealed that he still understood neither of them.

Maximilian lowered his hands. “I choose the truth you cannot put back in the box.”

Sirens rose beyond the hangars.

Hale’s intercepted agents had not captured the backup. They had surrendered after learning the ledger named them. State police and federal inspectors entered from three directions.

Dominic dragged Julian toward the plane. Julian locked the wheelchair brake, throwing both men off balance. Clara broke from Hale and reached her husband.

Maximilian could have seized Dominic’s fallen weapon.

He kicked it across the pavement instead.

That choice ended the Russo tradition more completely than any gunshot could have.

Officers arrested Hale, Dominic, and the remaining guards.

Clara knelt before Julian. He touched the ring at her throat, then her pregnant belly.

“I remember the diner,” he said, struggling for breath. “You gave me terrible coffee.”

She laughed and sobbed at once.

“You came back every day.”

“For the coffee,” he whispered.

May you like

“Liar.”

His hand trembled against hers. “I remember marrying you.”
