Chapter 10 - ARTHUR’S FIRST COUNTERATTACK
Arthur Sterling was not arrested after the raid.
That infuriated Clara until Agent Sloan explained why.
The basement proved unlawful confinement only if they could tie Luca’s presence directly to Arthur’s control.
Sterling’s lawyers claimed Victor Kane and rogue security staff operated without his knowledge.
The trust documents were suspicious but still under forensic review.
The Orchard files were complex.
And Luca Moretti was an organized-crime figure with every incentive to lie.
Arthur’s public statement was immaculate.
He described himself as “shocked” by evidence of misconduct on his property.
He announced an independent investigation.
He suspended Victor.
He pledged full cooperation.
He even expressed concern for Clara and Lily.
That part nearly made Clara sick.
Then his lawyers attacked.
They filed notice alleging Clara stole confidential medical and financial documents from Arthur’s study.
True.
They questioned whether her discovery contaminated evidence.
Fair.
They suggested Michael Higgins had been a disgruntled employee engaged in unauthorized cooperation with organized crime.
Partly true.
They claimed Lily’s medical trust had been administered within broad discretionary authority.
Legally arguable.
Arthur had spent decades building bad acts inside structures that could survive first contact with law.
Agent Sloan warned Clara:
“He’s going to make everything gray.”
Clara looked at the trust amendment.
“Even forgery?”
“He’ll say Michael authorized it orally. Or that a staff member prepared the signature. Or that he relied on counsel.”
Then Arthur attacked Clara personally.
A tabloid site published a story:
MAID STOLE FILES FROM BILLIONAIRE EMPLOYER BEFORE MAFIA RAID.
Clara’s photograph appeared beside Luca’s mug shot.
Commentators implied she was his accomplice.
Her landlord received calls.
Lily’s hospital saw reporters outside.
Clara stopped sleeping.
Then Arthur sent a message through counsel:
If Ms. Higgins returns all copied materials and ceases public accusations, Sterling Medical Foundation will ensure Lily’s treatment remains fully funded pending trust resolution.
Clara stared.
Maya Feldman, the civil attorney Sloan referred her to, read it twice.
“He just dressed coercion as settlement.”
Clara whispered:
“He still thinks Lily’s care is his.”
Maya nodded.
“Then we separate it.”
Within forty-eight hours, Maya filed an emergency petition in probate court seeking removal of Arthur as trustee, independent accounting, restoration of Lily’s medical trust, and temporary institutional control.
The court granted interim oversight.
Arthur lost unilateral access.
Lily’s care continued from her own funds.
When Clara told her, Lily cried.
