Chapter 17 - THE TRIAL OF ARTHUR STERLING
Arthur’s trial lasted nine weeks.
The government did not present him as a movie villain.
That would have been easier to attack.
They presented documents.
Trust amendments.
Shell transfers.
Foundation payments.
Surveillance records.
Basement construction invoices.
Vehicle movements.
Victor Kane’s testimony.
Luca’s testimony.
Maria’s archive.
Michael’s recording.
Orchard.
Victor cooperated after his own plea.
He admitted moving Luca through the service tunnel after Clara took the black file.
He admitted overseeing the cell.
He insisted he never physically tortured Luca.
Luca, on the stand, said:
“He didn’t need to. A locked door works.”
Arthur’s lawyers attacked Luca relentlessly.
Murderer.
Extortionist.
Liar.
Career criminal.
All true categories.
Then the prosecutor asked Luca:
“Why should anyone believe you?”
Luca answered:
“They shouldn’t unless my words match records.”
That was Michael’s lesson too.
Evidence over personality.
Clara testified about finding the cell and file.
Arthur’s counsel attacked her theft of the folder.
She admitted it.
“You stole documents?”
“Yes.”
“You trespassed in a private study?”
“I entered while employed in the house and removed a file after discovering a chained man below the property.”
The lawyer tried again.
“You broke rules.”
“Yes.”
“Yet you ask this jury to treat you as credible?”
Clara looked at him.
“I’m asking them to compare what I say to the photographs, records, basement, medical trust, and your client’s documents.”
Silence.
The case did not depend on Clara being perfect.
That protected her more than denial ever could.
The jury convicted Arthur on most major counts.
Not all.
One charge tied directly to ordering Michael’s death failed to reach the required proof standard.
Clara cried when she heard.
Not because she thought Arthur innocent.
Because law had a line and grief wanted more than evidence could provide.
Maya held her hand.
“Acquittal on one count is not the same as truth disappearing.”
