Chapter 5 - THE MAN WITH FLOWERS

The man called himself Victor Kane.

Clara had seen him twice at Sterling House.

Arthur introduced him as a security consultant.

He never smiled then.

He was smiling now.

“Open the door, Clara.”

She did not.

Lily whispered:

“Call the police.”

Clara was already texting Sloan.

Victor continued:

“I’m not here to hurt anyone.”

Clara almost laughed.

“That’s not comforting.”

He leaned closer to the door.

“Mr. Sterling knows you took a file.”

Lily looked at Clara.

There it was.

No pretending anymore.

Victor continued:

“Return it, and this remains a misunderstanding.”

“What about Luca?”

Silence.

Clara’s pulse kicked.

Victor said:

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

Bad lie.

Clara said:

“Then you can leave.”

His voice changed.

Still calm.

Less friendly.

“The medical support your sister receives is discretionary.”

Lily went white.

Clara’s anger came fast.

“You threaten her treatment and I send that sentence to the FBI.”

Victor did not answer.

Because he knew he had gone too far.

Then footsteps came from the stairwell.

Agent Sloan appeared with two plainclothes agents.

Victor’s posture changed instantly.

He stepped away from the door.

Sloan said:

“Mr. Kane.”

He smiled again.

“Agent Sloan.”

“Interesting place for flowers.”

“Visiting a friend.”

“Friend who won’t open the door?”

“Complicated friendship.”

Sloan asked him to leave.

Victor did.

No arrest.

No dramatic takedown.

Because intimidation was not always enough to handcuff someone immediately.

Inside the apartment, Sloan took the microSD card into evidence.

The recovery strip was photographed and sealed separately.

Then she looked at Lily.

“Your treatment is not going to stop today.”

“Can you guarantee that?”

“No.”

Lily appreciated honesty.

Sloan continued:

“But Sterling cannot legally control hospital care simply because his foundation funded grants. We’ll contact St. Anne’s compliance office.”

Clara sat down.

“What about Luca?”

Sloan’s face tightened.

“We need a warrant.”

“You know he’s there.”

“We have your statement, an old missing-person investigation, and an emergency code. We need a judge.”

“How long?”

“Not long.”

Clara hated that answer.

Luca was chained.

Arthur knew the file was gone.

Every hour mattered.

Sloan looked at her.

“Do not go back.”

Clara nodded.

She meant it.

For almost three hours.

Then she received an email.

No subject.

From an address she did not recognize.

One sentence:

If they raid the house before they understand the basement, Luca dies and so does the truth about your father.

Attached was a photograph.

Luca in the cell.

Today’s date written on a newspaper beside him.

Clara showed Sloan.

The agent swore.

“Arthur knows.”

“Obviously.”

Sloan looked at the image.

Then at Clara.

“He’s forcing us to move carefully.”

Clara whispered:

“He’s forcing Luca to remain leverage.”

And for the first time, she understood the strange balance beneath Sterling House.

Arthur had not kept a mafia boss alive out of mercy.

He kept him because a living enemy could still be used.
