Chapter 14 - ARTHUR STERLING’S ARREST
Arthur was arrested on a rainy Thursday morning.
No mansion spectacle.
No shouting.
He surrendered through counsel at the federal courthouse.
Charges included conspiracy, financial crimes, obstruction, unlawful imprisonment-related offenses, trust fraud, and charges tied to Michael Higgins’s death.
Not every allegation became a charge immediately.
Some required further evidence.
Some would never be provable.
Clara had learned to respect that distinction.
The public expected her to celebrate.
She didn’t.
She went to Lily’s hematology appointment.
They sat in plastic chairs beneath fluorescent lights while a television played a cooking show nobody watched.
Lily’s numbers were stable.
That mattered more.
Afterward, they bought sandwiches and sat outside.
Lily asked:
“Do you feel better?”
“No.”
“Me either.”
They ate.
Then Lily said:
“I thought revenge would feel louder.”
Clara looked at her.
“This isn’t revenge.”
“I know.”
“Do you?”
Lily smiled weakly.
“Learning.”
Arthur was denied access to certain accounts while the case proceeded.
His mansion was placed under asset restrictions.
Sterling Medical Foundation appointed an independent board.
Several programs turned out to be legitimate and were preserved.
That mattered to Clara too.
Thousands of patients had received real help through dirty architecture.
Destroying everything would punish the wrong people.
The foundation was separated from Sterling control instead.
No dramatic fire.
