Chapter 7 - THE RAID

The warrant was signed at 4:22 a.m.
By 5:10, federal agents were inside Sterling House.
Clara was not there.
She waited in a secured vehicle two streets away with Agent Sloan’s supervisor and hated every second.
Arthur’s attorneys arrived before sunrise.
Of course they did.
Sterling House produced rooms of records.
Servers.
Safes.
Encrypted devices.
But the western basement door was locked from the inside.
Agents breached it.
The cell was empty.
Clara felt her stomach drop when Sloan called.
“What do you mean empty?”
“Chains are there. Food. Bloodless medical supplies. Bedding. Evidence someone lived there.”
“Luca?”
“Gone.”
“Arthur moved him.”
“Yes.”
“When?”
“Probably after you took the file.”
Clara closed her eyes.
They had been too slow.
Or Arthur had always planned for this.
Arthur himself stood in the main hall throughout the search with counsel.
He denied imprisoning anyone.
The basement, he said, had been used years earlier as a secure panic room.
The chains?
Antique restraint equipment inherited with the property.
Ridiculous.
But ridiculous explanations still require evidence to defeat.
Then agents found a concealed service tunnel leading from the basement to an old carriage garage beyond the east garden.
Tire marks.
Fresh.
Luca had been moved.
Sloan looked furious.
“Sterling had an extraction route.”
Clara remembered Luca’s warning.
Go to Sterling’s study.
He knew Arthur’s systems.
Why hadn’t he warned her about the tunnel?
Unless Luca wanted the raid to happen.
Unless he needed Arthur to move him.
That thought chilled her.
Sloan stared at Clara.
“You’re thinking something.”
“Luca knew.”
“Knew what?”
“That Arthur would move him if the file disappeared.”
Sloan’s expression changed.
“Then Moretti may not have been waiting for rescue.”
Clara thought of his cold smile.
Obviously.
Of course.
Luca was a criminal boss who had survived long enough to make captivity part of strategy.
Sloan said:
“He may have used you.”
Clara swallowed.
“So did Arthur.”
“Both can be true.”
That became the rule of the story.
No easy heroes.
Only people with different reasons for needing Clara to move.
Then a search agent ran into the hall holding a small black phone.
Found inside the cell wall.
One outgoing message had been sent after Clara discovered Luca.
To a number in New Jersey.
Three words:
THE GIRL FOUND ME.
The reply:
MOVE PHASE TWO.
Clara stared.
Luca had a network outside.
Even in chains.
May you like
He had not been helpless.
And someone had been waiting for Clara specifically.
