Chapter 8 - THE WOMAN NAMED MARIA MORETTI
The number belonged to Maria Moretti.
Luca’s younger sister.
Fifty-one.
Attorney.
No criminal record.
Former federal prosecutor.
That surprised everyone.
Maria agreed to meet only after receiving proof Luca had been alive.
She entered the FBI office in a charcoal suit and looked at Clara as if measuring whether an apology would insult her intelligence.
“My brother used you.”
Clara nodded.
“I figured that out.”
“Good.”
“Did you know he was alive?”
“No.”
“But you knew about phase two.”
Maria’s face tightened.
“I knew a contingency phrase.”
“What does it mean?”
“If Luca disappeared under suspicious circumstances and someone named Higgins contacted us, I was supposed to open a sealed archive.”
Clara stopped.
“My father?”
“Yes.”
Maria looked at Sloan.
“My brother and Michael Higgins built a contingency together.”
Sloan folded her arms.
“Why would a federal accountant and a mafia boss build anything together?”
Maria answered calmly:
“Because my brother was trying to buy himself a future and Michael was trying to build a case.”
Clara stared.
“Luca was cooperating?”
“Unofficially. Badly. Selfishly.”
Maria did not romanticize him either.
Good.
She continued.
“Luca realized Sterling had become more dangerous than Moretti’s own organization because Arthur wore legitimacy better.”
Luca wanted immunity.
Michael wanted evidence.
Neither trusted the FBI enough yet.
They built a dead-man archive instead.
Maria retrieved it from a law-firm vault.
Inside were notarized statements from Michael, encrypted transaction extracts, and one audio recording.
Michael’s voice.
Clara had not heard it in six years.
The first word broke her.
“Clara.”
She covered her mouth.
The recording continued.
“If you’re hearing this, I failed to keep you out of it.”
She began crying.
Lily sat beside her and took her hand.
Michael explained Orchard.
Arthur’s trust fraud.
Luca’s role.
Then:
“Luca Moretti is not a good man. Do not confuse cooperation with goodness. But if he is alive and Arthur has him, it means Luca still has something Arthur cannot replace.”
Clara looked up.
Michael continued:
“The last Orchard ledger requires two independent recovery keys. Lily’s music box contains one.”
Sloan leaned forward.
“And the second?”
Michael’s recording answered:
“Luca carries the other where Sterling cannot take it without killing him.”
Clara thought of the silver ring.
The black onyx lion.
Not jewelry.
A container.
The second recovery key was inside Luca’s ring.
Arthur kept Luca alive because he needed the second key.
Luca stayed alive because he refused to give it.
