Chapter 1 - THAT'S NOT CLAIRE'S NECKLACE

For the first twenty minutes of his marriage, Adrian Hale believed he had finally reached the part of his life that could not be taken from him.
Claire was beside him.
The wedding was over.
The doors of the bridal suite were locked.
The noise downstairs had softened into distant music and laughter.
Adrian stood in front of the woman he had loved for three years and touched both hands to her face.
She looked exactly like Claire.
Same dark hair.
Same gray-blue eyes.
Same small scar near the left eyebrow.
Same smile that always appeared first on one side.
She was still wearing the ivory wedding dress.
His wedding ring gleamed beside hers.
For one quiet moment, Adrian forgot the board fights, the lawyers, the cameras, the endless pressure surrounding two old families determined to turn their marriage into a public event.
He kissed her forehead.
“You okay?”
The woman nodded.
“Just overwhelmed.”
Her voice sounded slightly rough.
Adrian smiled.
“You’ve barely spoken since the ceremony.”
“I’m tired.”
He believed her.
Then she reached up to loosen the lace at her throat.
A silver chain slipped free.
Adrian saw the pendant.
And everything inside him stopped.
It was a small oval necklace set with a dark blue stone.
Not the necklace Claire wore every day.
Claire’s necklace was gold.
A thin antique chain with a tiny crescent moon charm her mother had given her when she was thirteen.
Claire had once told Adrian:
“If I ever take this off willingly, assume I’ve lost my mind.”
He stared at the silver necklace.
Then at the woman.
His heart began to pound.
“Where’s your necklace?”
She froze.
“What?”
Adrian stepped back.
Her face changed.
Fear.
Not confusion.
Fear.
He pointed.
“THAT’S NOT CLAIRE’S NECKLACE!”
The woman went pale.
“Adrian… please—”
He shoved her away from him.
She stumbled backward into the edge of the dressing table.
Adrian’s breathing exploded.
“WHO ARE YOU?!”
She started crying.
“Adrian, I love you!”
His face twisted with rage.
“DON’T SAY THAT!”
He grabbed her shoulders.
Not hard enough to hurt.
Hard enough to force her to look at him.
“You’re not Claire.”
The woman broke down.
Adrian stared into her face.
Every feature was right.
That was what made it terrifying.
The mouth.
The cheekbones.
The eyes.
Even the tiny scar.
But something was wrong.
Now that he knew to look, he saw it everywhere.
Claire tilted her head when frightened.
This woman lowered her eyes.
Claire’s left hand trembled under stress.
This woman’s right did.
Claire hated silver jewelry.
This woman wore it as though she had for years.
She reached for him.
“Please… let me explain.”
Adrian jerked away.
His anger began changing into horror.
“What did you do?”
She shook her head.
“I never wanted—”
Adrian stepped toward her again.
Tears burned his eyes.
“WHERE IS CLAIRE?!”
The woman froze.
May you like
Her lips trembled.
“I… I…”
