Chapter 6 - THE WEDDING WAS A TRIGGER
The marriage itself was not romantic to Malcolm Bennett.
It was a corporate trigger.
Hale Meridian and Bennett Capital had spent eighteen months negotiating a merger.
The Hale family controlled logistics and infrastructure.
The Bennett family controlled private equity and real estate.
Together, the combined company would be worth nearly $9 billion.
The merger agreement contained a family-control provision Malcolm insisted on.
If Claire Bennett married Adrian Hale before closing, a block of Bennett voting shares transferred into a marital holding trust.
Adrian thought it was ceremonial.
It was not.
Those shares gave Malcolm enough temporary voting power to approve the merger before the twin issue could freeze the trust.
But Evelyn’s existence changed everything.
If Evelyn had not waived her rights, Malcolm did not control the shares he promised.
That meant the merger documents contained a material ownership problem.
Claire discovered it.
Then disappeared.
Adrian looked at the wedding certificate again.
“By marrying me as Evelyn, what happens?”
Evelyn answered:
“The marital trust trigger may fail.”
“Because you aren’t Claire.”
“Yes.”
“Does Malcolm know?”
“He thinks the ceremony documents were prepared under Claire’s legal profile.”
Adrian looked at the certificate.
“Then why does this say Evelyn?”
Evelyn swallowed.
“Because Claire changed the filing packet before she disappeared.”
Adrian stared.
A contingency.
Claire had anticipated something.
She had quietly replaced the marriage license application with one naming Evelyn as bride.
That did not solve the deception.
