Chapter 3 - THE DAUGHTER THEY ERASED

Twenty-seven years earlier, Margaret Bennett gave birth to twin daughters at a private clinic outside Boston.

Claire arrived first.

Evelyn seven minutes later.

Their father, Malcolm Bennett, was already fighting a succession battle inside Bennett Capital.

The family trust was old, badly drafted, and obsessed with firstborn lines.

A clause nobody had cared about for generations suddenly mattered.

If the controlling heir had multiple daughters born in the same delivery, certain voting shares would remain locked until both reached thirty or both formally waived competing claims.

Malcolm wanted immediate control.

So he made one daughter disappear on paper.

Not literally.

Evelyn was placed with Margaret’s unmarried sister, June, in Maine.

The birth was sealed through a private adoption.

Money moved.

Lawyers handled records.

Family physicians stayed quiet.

Claire grew up as Malcolm Bennett’s only daughter.

Evelyn grew up as Evelyn Cross.

She did not learn the truth until she was twenty-three.

By then, Claire was already dating Adrian Hale.

Adrian stared at Evelyn across the bridal suite.

“You expect me to believe your father hid a twin for money?”

“Yes.”

“Why come back now?”

“Because Claire found me.”

“When?”

“Eight months ago.”

Adrian’s heart kicked.

Eight months.

That was when Claire began acting differently.

More secretive.

More anxious.

She started asking strange questions about the Bennett trust.

She postponed the wedding twice.

Adrian thought she was scared of marriage.

Maybe she had been scared of something else.

Evelyn whispered:

“She found the sealed adoption file.”

“Why didn’t she tell me?”

“She wanted proof before pulling you into it.”

Adrian closed his eyes.

That sounded like Claire.

Always evidence first.

Then he opened them.

“Where is she?”

May you like

Evelyn started crying again.

“I don’t know.”
