Chapter 8 - THE LOCATION INSIDE THE PHOTOGRAPH

Mara arrived with federal agents before dawn.
Not through the lobby.
Through a service entrance.
She had spent eighteen hours tracing the burner number that sent Evelyn Claire’s photograph.
No useful location.
But the photograph itself contained something.
A reflection.
In the metal base of a lamp behind Claire, investigators enhanced a distorted image of a window.
Beyond it:
a water tower.
Three letters visible.
BHC.
Bennett Health Campus.
Malcolm controlled an abandoned rehabilitation hospital forty miles outside the city.
Bennett Health Center.
Closed two years earlier.
Still privately owned.
Agents searched it at 5:42 a.m.
They found Claire in a locked administrative wing.
Alive.
Dehydrated.
Sedated.
Terrified.
Two private security contractors were arrested.
Neither was told the whole plan.
They were paid to keep “a mentally unstable family member” inside until after the merger vote.
Claire told investigators Malcolm visited once.
He never threatened to kill her.
He did say:
“By tomorrow, it won’t matter what you say.”
That line mattered.
The goal was timing.
Not murder.
Control the wedding.
Control the vote.

Close the merger.
Then treat Claire’s accusation as a family breakdown after the fact.
