Chapter 2 - HER NAME WAS EVELYN

The woman’s name was Evelyn Bennett.
She was Claire’s identical twin sister.
Adrian laughed when she said it.
Not because it was funny.
Because the alternative was screaming.
“No.”
Evelyn stood barefoot beside the bed, still wearing Claire’s wedding dress.
“My name is Evelyn.”
“Claire doesn’t have a sister.”
“She does.”
“No.”
“Adrian—”
“Stop saying my name.”
He backed toward the door.
Evelyn’s face collapsed.
He had never seen Claire look that afraid.
That fact made him hate the resemblance.
He unlocked the suite.
Then stopped.
“If you leave,” Evelyn whispered, “they’ll know you know.”
Adrian turned.
“Who?”
She looked toward the hallway.
“I can’t tell you yet.”
He stared at her.
“You married me under another woman’s name.”
“The license doesn’t say Claire.”
Adrian went still.
“What?”
Evelyn reached toward the vanity drawer.
Adrian snapped:
“Don’t.”
She stopped.
“The certified copy is in there.”
He opened the drawer himself.
Marriage certificate.
He read the bride’s name.
Evelyn Claire Bennett.
Adrian’s blood went cold.
“You used her middle name.”
“No.”
“My legal name has always been Evelyn Claire Bennett.”
He looked up.
Evelyn continued.
“Claire’s legal name is Claire Evelyn Bennett.”
Two daughters.
Mirrored names.
Same birth date.
Same mother.
Different birth certificates.
Adrian stared at the paper.
“How is that possible?”
Evelyn’s answer came barely above a whisper.
“Our mother had twins.”

Then:
“And my father made sure the world only knew about one.”
