Chapter 24 - THE HEARING AT BOOTH SEVEN
The state licensing board reviewed whether Bell’s Diner had failed to protect customers during the confrontation. June feared losing the business her family had run for forty-one years.
The hearing occurred inside the diner because storm damage had closed the county meeting room.
Rex testified first.
He admitted he and his friends created the danger. June had told them twice to leave Arthur alone. Rex ignored her because customers laughed and phones were recording.
“The diner didn’t invite what happened,” he said. “I did.”
Arthur confirmed June tried to intervene. Mara acknowledged her convoy’s size increased fear, even though the duplicate key fob had added the false armed-threat command. Silver Hawk changed its emergency protocols so no founder signal could dispatch a large response without independent verification.
The board renewed June’s license without penalty.
Afterward, she served black coffee to Arthur and water to Rex.
“Still banned from drinking here?” Rex asked.
“You’re sitting here, aren’t you?”
“Is that forgiveness?”
“It’s a chair. Don’t make it sentimental.”
Arthur almost laughed.
News crews asked them to recreate the confrontation for a documentary. Both refused. The viral clip had already flattened everyone into familiar roles: helpless old man, arrogant bully, secret king, frightened crowd. The truth was less satisfying and more useful.
Arthur had once commanded a vast organization but failed to question its money. Rex had inherited anger but chosen public cruelty. Thomas had saved a man and abandoned him. Eleanor protected Michael and deceived Arthur. Wade did terrible things while claiming to preserve jobs and brotherhood.
No fifteen-second video could contain that.
As the hearing ended, a teenage dishwasher approached Arthur with the black key fob recovered from evidence.
“Are you going to keep carrying this?” he asked.

“No,” he said. “No one person should have that button.”
