Chapter 4 - THE SECOND LEDGER
Arthur listened to the recording three times.
He knew of no second ledger.
The first documented grants from the Silver Hawk Veterans Housing Fund. The missing eight million had been transferred through four construction vendors before the warehouse burned.
Thomas claimed Michael found a second ledger tracking cash contributions never reported to the board. Those contributions came from freight companies paying Silver Hawk crews to ignore sealed cargo at roadside checkpoints.
“Smuggling?” Mara asked.
“At first, stolen electronics,” Thomas said. “Then prescription drugs. Wade called it emergency fundraising.”
Thomas admitted signing vendor transfers after Wade threatened to reveal that Elaine had falsified loan applications. He planned to copy the ledger and take both books to Michael. Instead, the warehouse exploded.
Thomas found Michael alive beneath a collapsed shelf, badly burned but conscious. Michael pressed his patch into Thomas’s hand and told him to run with the ledger.
Thomas reached the alley. Agent Voss intercepted him, took the book, and showed him photographs of Rex leaving school.
“I thought Michael would be rescued,” Thomas said.
The fire report stated he died from smoke inhalation before firefighters entered.
Arthur remembered identifying his son by dental records and a wedding ring. The body was too badly burned for visual confirmation.
Mara requested exhumation. Arthur signed the family consent.
Rex refused to believe his father. He accused Thomas of returning because Wade planned to sell Silver Hawk Holdings for six hundred million dollars and former founders expected a payout.
The accusation was not baseless. Thomas’s old membership interest, if restored, could be worth millions.
Wade’s sale required approval from the Founders Trust. Arthur held no controlling vote, but the trust could delay a transfer if an original emblem had been stolen or misused in connection with fraud. Michael’s patch gave Arthur grounds to trigger a sixty-day investigation.
He filed the notice.
Wade responded by having Silver Hawk security report the diner convoy as an unauthorized armed gathering.
