Chapter 3 - THE VIDEO THAT MADE ARTHUR LOOK DANGEROUS

Police arrived nine minutes later.

Arthur insisted Rex not be arrested for taking the cane or breaking the glass. Diner owner June Bell still demanded payment for the damage and banned Rex’s group until they apologized to her staff.

Rex interpreted Arthur’s refusal to press charges as another display of power.

“You think mercy makes you look clean?” he asked.

“No,” Arthur said. “I think your stupidity and my son’s death are separate matters.”

The bikers’ phone videos reached social media before the storm passed. Edited clips showed Arthur press the black device, announce “Bring him here,” and summon a formation of riders. The moments where Rex stole his cane disappeared.

By morning, headlines described Arthur as a retired motorcycle king calling enforcers against a younger rival.

That distortion helped Wade Mercer.

Mercer had served beside Arthur as one of Silver Hawk’s original twelve founders. After Michael’s death and Arthur’s retirement, Wade became chairman of Silver Hawk Holdings, the for-profit roadside network that funded the charity.

He appeared on television expressing concern about Arthur’s “increasing instability.”

“Silver Hawk has outgrown the outlaw culture of its early years,” Wade said. “We cannot let nostalgia endanger employees.”

Mara showed Arthur the interview in a motel conference room where federal agents were debriefing Thomas.

“He moved faster than we expected,” she said.

Thomas explained his disappearance. After the warehouse fire, a corrupt federal agent named Colin Voss threatened Rex and Rex’s mother, Elaine. Thomas entered an unofficial protection arrangement, believing formal testimony would get his family killed. When Voss later died, Thomas discovered the case had never reached prosecutors.

He had spent years gathering replacement evidence.

Arthur asked the question that had waited seventeen years.

“Why didn’t you tell me Michael was alive?”

Thomas looked at him with exhausted hatred. “Because Michael told me you were part of it.”

He placed an old microcassette recorder on the table.

Michael’s voice emerged through static.

“If my father asks, tell him I found the second ledger. If he denies knowing about it, run.”
