Chapter 10 - THE MOTHER WHO KNEW
Carol denied wrongdoing.
Then she admitted the text.
Derek had told her Laura planned to expose “family financial problems.”
Carol thought Laura intended to leave Michael and take Noah.
Derek said:
“She won’t be a problem after tonight.”
Carol interpreted it as Derek planning to talk her down.
Why delete the message?
Because after Laura died, it sounded terrible.
Carol panicked.
She deleted it.
Then lied to police about Derek being home.
Michael stared at his mother.
“You gave him an alibi.”
“I was protecting my son.”
“Which one?”
Carol began crying.
She had chosen Derek repeatedly because Derek always seemed more fragile.
Michael was successful.
Married.
Stable.
Derek needed help.
The family pattern mirrored everything Michael had missed.
Derek turned weakness into protection.
He looked like the brother who needed saving.
He was also the brother quietly taking.
Carol admitted one more thing.
After Laura died, Derek brought her Laura’s phone.
He said he found it near the crash site and feared police would misunderstand the messages.
Carol let him hide it.
She had been protecting him for two years.
Michael left without speaking.
The criminal case against Derek strengthened.
But still no proof he caused Laura’s crash.
Then the vehicle insurance archive produced a forgotten photograph.
The car’s rear tire showed damage.
At the time, investigators called it crash-related.
A new expert disagreed.
The sidewall had been punctured before the collision.
Not necessarily deliberate.
Could be road debris.
Then Laura’s voice memo revealed a faint metallic sound near the end.
An expert identified it as possibly a tire losing pressure.
Still circumstantial.
Derek’s lawyer argued Laura may have hit debris.
Then Noah’s case took another turn.
Doctors found no single pattern proving all bruises came from one event.
Some could be accidental.
The prosecutor needed clearer evidence.
Michael felt rage at the limits of proof.
Then a neighbor came forward.
Mr. Howard Pierce lived two houses away.
He had seen Derek carry Noah from the house to his truck days before Michael found him.
Noah was crying.
Derek looked angry.
Why wait to report it?
Pierce had dementia symptoms.
His daughter only recently reviewed his home camera after hearing about the case.
The footage existed.
Derek dragging Noah by the wrist toward the truck.
No graphic injury.
But clear rough handling.
The timestamp matched a day Derek claimed he had not seen Noah.
Another lie.
Then the camera showed something else.
Before leaving, Derek returned to Michael’s front door.
He taped an envelope underneath the porch bench.
Police checked.
The envelope was still there.
Inside was a notarized document.
Temporary guardianship of Noah.
Michael’s signature appeared at the bottom.
Forged.
If Michael became “unavailable,” Derek would have had paperwork ready to take Noah.
