Chapter 3 - THE AUNT WHO CAME FIRST

Emily met Michael the next morning with a lawyer present.

She looked frightened but angry.

“I went to your house because Laura left something with me.”

Michael stared.

“Laura’s been dead two years.”

“I know.”

“What?”

“A key.”

Emily explained that before Laura died, she had grown suspicious of Derek.

Not because of Noah.

Because of money.

Laura handled bookkeeping for Michael’s construction company during the first years of their marriage. She noticed invoices connected to a subcontractor called Turner Logistics.

Michael remembered the company.

Derek had recommended it.

Emily said Laura believed the invoices were inflated.

“She thought Derek was taking money.”

Michael shook his head.

“That makes no sense. Derek was helping me.”

“That’s exactly why she was scared.”

After Laura died, Emily kept quiet because she had no proof.

Then two weeks earlier, she found an old envelope among Laura’s stored belongings.

Inside was a key and a note:

IF ANYTHING HAPPENS TO ME, CHECK STORAGE 417.

Emily went to Michael’s house because she needed Laura’s old business records.

She wanted to compare signatures before opening the storage unit.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because you defend Derek every time anyone questions him.”

That hurt because it was true.

Emily admitted she was in the house for twenty minutes.

She saw Noah asleep on the sofa.

No bruises visible from where she stood.

Derek was not there.

She left.

The doorbell footage confirmed the timing.

Derek returned nearly three hours later.

What happened between?

Michael opened storage unit 417 with police present.

Inside were old company ledgers, contracts, and copies of invoices.

Laura had highlighted dozens of payments to Turner Logistics.

Over four years: $1.8 million.

Turner Logistics did not own trucks.

It did not have employees.

Its registered address was a mailbox.

The owner listed in old state records was someone named David Mercer.

Michael did not know him.

Emily did.

“That’s Derek’s middle name and Laura’s father’s last name combined.”

Michael felt sick.

Derek had created a shell company.

Possibly years earlier.

That gave him motive to fear Laura’s records.

But it did not explain Noah.

Then detectives found one file labeled LIFE INSURANCE.

Michael assumed it related to Laura.

It did not.

A policy had been taken out three months earlier.

Insured: Noah Turner.

Policy owner: Michael Turner.

Beneficiary: Michael Turner.

Michael had never applied.

His signature was on the form.

Forged.

The agent who processed it remembered dealing with “Mr. Turner.”

But he could not identify whether it was Michael or Derek from memory.

The brothers resembled each other.

Samantha Cole immediately attacked the implication.

Why would Derek forge a policy making Michael the beneficiary?

Good question.

Then police found an amendment request in draft form.

Change beneficiary to Turner Family Holdings.

That company was controlled by Derek.

The amendment had not been filed.

Yet.

Michael stared at the page.

Then Emily whispered:

“Laura wasn’t investigating stolen invoices.”

“What was she investigating?”

Emily looked toward the detective.

“She thought Derek was planning to take the company from you.”

And inside storage unit 417 sat a sealed folder labeled:

MICHAEL - INCAPACITY.
