Chapter 6 - THE BROTHER WHO PREPARED EVERYTHING

Derek admitted the argument.
He denied threatening violence.
“He won’t get the chance” meant Laura was preparing to leave Michael and take company records.
Samantha Cole produced an email where Laura discussed moving to another state.
Real.
Michael had never seen it.
Emily knew.
Laura had considered leaving because she felt Michael always sided with Derek.
That revelation hurt.
It also gave Derek another alternative narrative.
Laura’s death could be accident.
Her argument with Derek could be financial.
No murder required.
The police focused on current crimes.
Fraud.
Forgery.
Child endangerment.
Possible assault.
Derek remained free pending evidence.
Then he attacked Michael’s parenting.
His attorney filed for temporary guardianship review through family court.
Not seeking custody for Derek.
That would look absurd.
Instead, Derek asked the court to appoint Michael’s mother, Carol Turner, as temporary caregiver because Michael was “emotionally unstable and financially overwhelmed.”
Carol was seventy.
She loved Noah.
She also worshiped Derek.
Michael’s own mother signed an affidavit.
She said Michael had become obsessive.
Aggressive.
Unable to sleep.
Neglecting work.
All true after finding Noah.
The filing made him look unstable because he was reacting to a crisis Derek helped create.
Smart.
Carol refused to believe Derek hurt Noah.
“He practically raised that boy when you were working.”
Michael stared at her.
“That’s exactly the problem.”
Carol slapped the table.
“You always blame him when you feel guilty.”
There it was.
Derek had been telling the family Michael neglected Noah.
For months.
Building the story.
Michael’s lawyer uncovered group messages.
Derek:
Michael’s never home.
Derek:
Noah needs consistency.
Derek:
If something happens, someone has to step in.
The messages began five months earlier.
Before the insurance policy.
Before the incapacity plan surfaced.
Before Noah’s bruises.
Derek was preparing family perception.
Then police found a financial connection between Samantha Cole and Turner Family Holdings.
Derek’s lawyer had previously advised the holding company.
Conflict?
Potentially.
Samantha disclosed it promptly and said the work was unrelated.
Still, it showed Derek had legal planning in place long before the investigation.
Michael began to understand the architecture.
If Michael became incapacitated: Derek controlled the company.
If Michael looked unstable: Carol could take Noah temporarily.
If Noah’s insurance changed beneficiary: Turner Family Holdings gained financially.
If Derek controlled both company and family assets, he won.
But why risk hurting Noah?
Then Michael discovered the missing piece.
Laura’s life insurance.
After her death, Michael received $2.4 million.
He used most of it to stabilize Turner Development.
The funds went into the company.
Derek had access to some accounts.
Forensic accountants traced $600,000 from those funds into subcontractor payments later routed through Turner Logistics.
Derek had stolen part of Laura’s insurance money.
Noah’s policy was not the beginning.
It was repetition.
Then the investigators found one more insurance application.
Insured: Michael Turner.
Benefit: five million dollars.
Owner: Turner Family Holdings.
Signed eighteen months earlier.
Michael had never seen it.
May you like
Derek had not only prepared for Michael’s incapacity.
He had financially prepared for Michael’s death.
