Chapter 8 - LAURA'S PHONE
Laura’s phone was damaged but recoverable.
The final messages were devastating.
LAURA TO EMILY:
I found the account.
LAURA TO MICHAEL:
Call me when you wake up. We need to talk about Derek.
The message to Michael never delivered.
Then one draft message:
Derek followed me.
Another:
He says he can explain.
No message proved violence.
Then audio.
Laura had started a voice memo.
Wind.
A car door.
Derek’s voice.
“You’re making this bigger than it is.”
Laura:
“You stole from us.”
Derek:
“I borrowed.”
Laura:
“You forged Michael’s name.”
Silence.
Then Derek:
“If you tell him, everything falls apart.”
Laura:
“Good.”
The recording ended.
Michael listened once.
He could not hear the crash.
No murder evidence.
But Derek had been with Laura shortly before she died and lied about it.
That reopened the criminal investigation seriously.
Derek changed lawyers.
Samantha withdrew after conflict scrutiny.
His new attorney, Paul Benton, was more aggressive.
He attacked Laura’s credibility.
He suggested she may have driven recklessly after the argument.
He suggested Derek left before she departed.
Possible.
He accused Michael of exploiting grief to frame his brother.
Then Paul did something unexpected.
He offered a proffer.
Derek would admit financial fraud.
He would admit following Laura.
He would admit hiding her phone.
But he would deny causing the crash and deny hurting Noah intentionally.
Why admit so much?
Because Derek knew investigators had it.
He wanted to define the remaining unknowns.
Michael’s lawyer explained.
“He’s giving them the crimes they can prove to protect himself from the crimes they can’t.”
Smart.
The prosecutor refused a broad immunity deal.
Derek remained exposed.
Then Noah remembered another phrase.
“Uncle said Mommy should’ve stayed quiet.”
The child specialist asked when he heard that.
“At Daddy work.”
Recently.
Derek had spoken about Laura in front of Noah.
Why?
Michael reviewed warehouse camera backups.
Most deleted.
One maintenance camera remained.
It showed Derek entering the warehouse with Noah three weeks earlier.
Derek had claimed Noah was never there.
Another lie.
He stayed forty minutes.
When they left, Noah was crying.
The video had no audio.
Michael’s anger became physical.
His lawyer warned him:
“Do not confront Derek.”
Derek expected confrontation.
He wanted Michael angry.
Then a package arrived at Michael’s office.
Inside was a handwritten note:
ASK NOAH WHAT HE SAW IN THE LOWER ROOM.
No sender.
The warehouse had a lower maintenance room beneath the loading dock.
Michael had not used it in years.
Police searched it.
Inside they found shredded papers, old company stamps, and a child-sized chair.
Nothing illegal by itself.
Then they found a wall panel.
Behind it: a hidden safe.
Inside: cash, forged IDs, and blank corporate certificates.
And one photograph.
Noah standing beside Derek.
The date stamp: three weeks earlier.
Behind them was a whiteboard.
Written across it:
MICHAEL - REMOVAL TIMELINE.
