Chapter 2 - IT WAS UNCLE DEREK

The front door burst wider as Michael pulled it fully open for the paramedics he had called.

Derek stepped inside behind him.

Both men froze when Noah’s small body shifted weakly against the wall.

“Noah!”

Michael sprinted forward.

He dropped to his knees and carefully lifted his son into his arms.

“Son, wake up!”

Noah’s head rested against his chest.

His eyelids fluttered.

Michael’s hands shook.

“Who did this to you?”

Noah moved one hand.

Slowly.

Painfully.

His finger lifted past Michael’s shoulder.

Derek stopped.

“Dad…”

Michael followed the direction.

Derek’s expression emptied.

Noah’s finger stayed aimed at him.

“It was Uncle Derek.”

Michael froze.

Noah began crying weakly.

“He’s the one who hurt me.”

Everything inside Michael turned cold.

He stood carefully with Noah held against his chest.

Derek backed toward the open door.

“Michael, listen to me.”

“You stay right there.”

“Your son is confused.”

“He said your name.”

“He’s barely conscious.”

Michael took one step forward.

Derek raised both hands.

“I would never hurt him.”

The ambulance siren grew louder.

Derek’s voice became urgent.

“Think. If I did this, why would I come back?”

Michael had no answer.

That was Derek’s first defense.

Not denial.

Logic.

Paramedics entered.

Noah was taken to the hospital.

Doctors confirmed he had several pre-existing bruises and signs of dehydration and exhaustion. No life-threatening injury. No broken bones.

Michael stood beside the bed while a detective spoke to Noah gently.

Noah repeated Derek’s name.

But four-year-old statements required careful handling.

Derek hired a lawyer before midnight.

The lawyer, Samantha Cole, arrived with an explanation.

Derek claimed he had returned to the house after receiving a strange text from Noah’s tablet.

HOME.

He said he assumed Michael was already there.

He denied being alone with Noah for most of the day.

His phone location supported part of his story.

It showed Derek at a hardware store, a gas station, and a warehouse.

Michael knew immediately something was wrong.

Derek had supposedly canceled the sitter to stay with Noah.

Why did his phone show him everywhere except the house?

Then Samantha produced a second detail.

A neighbor’s doorbell camera showed a woman entering Michael’s house that afternoon.

Laura’s sister.

Emily Grant.

Noah’s aunt on his mother’s side.

Michael stared at the image.

Emily had not been invited.

She had not spoken to Michael in months.

And now Derek’s lawyer suggested something worse.

Maybe Noah meant “uncle” because he was confused by family titles.

Maybe Derek had found the child after someone else left.

Then Michael’s phone buzzed.

A message from Emily.

I DIDN’T HURT NOAH. BUT DEREK KNOWS WHY I WAS THERE.

Michael looked across the hospital corridor at his brother.

Derek was already watching him.
