Chapter 1 - THE SON SHE CHOSE

For twenty-three years, Evelyn Mercer had introduced Daniel as her son.

Never her foster son.

Never the frightened eight-year-old boy who had arrived at her Boston brownstone carrying everything he owned inside a plastic grocery bag.

Just her son.

At sixty-one, Evelyn had built Mercer Urban Holdings into one of the largest privately owned real-estate groups in New England. Her name appeared on hospital wings, university buildings, and charity boards. Yet the person she had spent the most money protecting was Daniel.

She had paid for private schools after he was bullied.

She had sent him to Northwestern.

She had covered the disastrous restaurant investment he made at twenty-six.

She had even quietly settled the lawsuit that followed when one of Daniel's business partners accused him of diverting company funds.

Evelyn had told herself that mistakes were different from character.

Recently, she had begun wondering whether she had been wrong.

Daniel had started asking questions about her estate.

Not directly.

He was clever enough for that.

He asked whether the brownstone was held personally or through a trust. He asked whether Mercer Urban Holdings carried key-person insurance. He casually mentioned that estate taxes could destroy family businesses if documents were not properly organized.

Every question sounded reasonable.

Together, they felt like footsteps following her in the dark.

The only person who seemed to notice Evelyn's discomfort was Maya Ortiz, whose red food truck had occupied the curb beside Evelyn's brownstone for six years.

Maya sold empanadas, soup, and strong coffee to construction workers, attorneys, and neighbors.

She also noticed everything.

One rainy Tuesday, Maya handed Evelyn her usual coffee and studied her face.

"You look tired."

"I'm sixty-one."

"That's not what I said."

Evelyn smiled.

Daniel appeared in the doorway before she could answer.

His expression was warm.

Too warm.

"Mom, we need to talk about the trust."

Evelyn looked at him.

"I don't remember telling you there was one."

Daniel's smile paused for perhaps half a second.

Then it returned.

"You've mentioned it."

"No."

Rain began tapping harder against Maya's metal awning.

Daniel shrugged.

"Then I must've seen something on your desk."

Evelyn said nothing.

That evening, she opened the locked drawer inside her study.

The estate folder was still there.

But the pages were slightly out of order.

Someone had read them.

At the very bottom of the drawer, Evelyn discovered something else.

A photograph.

Old.

Creased.

A young man she had not seen in almost thirty years stood beside Daniel's biological mother.

On the back, someone had recently written three words in black ink:

HE'S COMING HOME.

And Evelyn recognized the man immediately.

His name was Thomas Vale.

May you like

The last time Evelyn had seen him, he had promised to destroy her.
