Chapter 13 - THE HOSTAGE WITHOUT CHAINS
Sofia had not been kidnapped.
Daniel was smarter than that.
Instead, Sofia's employer received documents accusing her of insurance fraud.
Her landlord received an anonymous complaint regarding lease violations.
Her bank suddenly froze a business account after receiving a suspicious-activity report.
Every accusation was false.
Together, they created chaos.
Daniel had turned Sofia's ordinary life into a pressure point.
Maya disappeared because she was trying to help her sister.
When Evelyn finally found her at Sofia's apartment, Maya was furious.
"You brought this into my family."
Evelyn did not defend herself.
"I did."
Maya looked exhausted.
"Daniel says he'll stop if I publicly admit I lied about the sidewalk attack."
"Will you?"
"No."
That answer cost Maya something.
Evelyn saw it.
Daniel called moments later.
Maya put the phone on speaker.
"I don't need you to say Evelyn tried to bribe you," Daniel said. "Just say you were confused during the storm."
"You nearly killed her."
"You can't prove intent."
"You're disgusting."
"Maybe. But your sister still has a life to protect."
He ended the call.
Evelyn immediately hired independent attorneys for Sofia and forensic investigators to trace the false reports.
Within two days, they found a mistake.
Not Daniel's mistake.
One made by someone working for him.
An insurance complaint had been submitted through a commercial VPN account purchased by Vale Systems.
Thomas's company.
Daniel had used infrastructure he did not fully control.
Thomas could connect him to it.
When confronted, Thomas agreed to cooperate.
Not because he had developed a conscience.
Because Daniel had frozen his money.
Thomas handed investigators internal server logs.
They tied Daniel to multiple harassment campaigns.
Daniel was arrested for witness tampering and obstruction.
But he had anticipated even that.
Marcus Hale produced evidence that Thomas still possessed administrator privileges and could have fabricated the logs.
Again, Daniel had created doubt before the evidence arrived.
The judge granted bail with restrictions.
Outside the courthouse, reporters surrounded him.
Daniel said only one sentence.
"I spent my entire life inside Evelyn Mercer's lies."
Public sympathy remained divided.
That evening, Evelyn found Daniel waiting outside her brownstone.
He was prohibited from entering.
He stayed on the sidewalk.
"You think Thomas beat me," he said.
"No."
"You should."
Evelyn studied him.
Daniel looked strangely peaceful.
"I don't need the board anymore."
"What did you do?"
Daniel glanced toward Mercer headquarters in the distance.
Then Evelyn's phone began ringing.
Rebecca.
Board members.
Her chief financial officer.
All at once.
Daniel smiled.
