Chapter 14 - THE COMPANY WITHOUT A THRONE

For months, Daniel had quietly purchased distressed Mercer debt through shell investment funds.
Not enough to attract attention individually.
Together, enough to matter.
When the federal inquiry weakened the company's lenders, Daniel bought more.
Now his entities controlled a block of debt carrying covenants that allowed accelerated repayment if Mercer Urban Holdings' credit rating dropped again.
He did not need to own the company.
He could choke it.
Thomas had taught him to attack structure.
Evelyn had taught him patience.
Daniel had learned from both.
The board panicked.
If Daniel demanded repayment, Mercer might be forced to sell valuable buildings at disastrous prices.
He offered one solution.
Evelyn resigns.
Daniel receives voting control.
Debt terms are extended.
Rebecca called it extortion dressed as finance.
Daniel called it capitalism.
For the first time, Evelyn considered surrendering.
Thousands of employees could suffer if she fought merely to preserve her pride.
Maya refused to let her decide emotionally.
"Why did Daniel buy the debt?"
"To control me."
"No. How did he buy it?"
Evelyn stopped.
Daniel had never been wealthy enough.
Thomas's accounts were largely frozen.
The investment funds required more than thirty million dollars.
Rebecca traced financing.
The money came from a private fund called Red Harbor Capital.
Its beneficial owner was concealed.
But one director's name appeared in an old Delaware registration.
Laura Bennett.
Daniel's dead mother.
Impossible.
Unless the fund predated her death.
They dug deeper.
Laura and Thomas had not lost all the stolen money in 1998.
Laura had hidden part of it.
Millions had grown quietly for decades.
Thomas believed the accounts were lost.
Daniel had discovered them first.
The forty-eight million inheritance was never his only target.
He already controlled a hidden fortune built from his parents' original fraud.
That changed everything.
If prosecutors could prove Red Harbor derived from stolen Mercer funds, Daniel's debt position could be seized.
They needed the original account trail.
Only one person might possess it.
Andrew Pike.
Police located Pike at last after he contacted Rebecca voluntarily.
He agreed to testify in exchange for protection.
The meeting was arranged at a federal office the following morning.
Pike never arrived.
At 6:12 a.m., Maya received a voicemail.
Pike's terrified voice whispered:
"I found Laura's original ledger."
A door slammed in the background.
Then Daniel's voice could be heard.
Calm.
Close.
"Andrew, give me the book."
The recording ended.

And police discovered Daniel's ankle monitor sitting on his kitchen table.
