Chapter 4 - THE FATHER
Thomas Vale arrived in Boston forty-eight hours later.
He did not sneak into the city.
He announced himself.
A black sedan stopped in front of Evelyn's brownstone shortly after noon. Thomas stepped out wearing a charcoal suit and the expression of a man returning to property he believed had always belonged to him.
He was sixty-four now.
Gray-haired.
Controlled.
Still dangerous.
Daniel embraced him on the sidewalk.
Maya watched from her truck.
Evelyn watched from an upstairs window.
Thomas looked directly toward her.
Then smiled.
In 1997, Thomas Vale had been CFO of Evelyn's first development company.
He had also been having an affair with Laura Bennett, Daniel's biological mother.
Thomas had manipulated invoices and moved nearly two million dollars through shell contractors.
Evelyn discovered the theft.
Thomas vanished before prosecutors could secure an indictment.
Laura stayed behind.
Years later, after Laura died from an overdose, Daniel entered foster care.
Evelyn had taken him in partly because she felt guilty.
She had believed the sins of his parents should not define a child.
Now Thomas walked into her living room as though he were attending a business meeting.
"You poisoned her," Evelyn said.
Daniel leaned back.
"Prove it."
Thomas raised one hand.
"Daniel."
The correction sounded paternal.
Strategic.
Thomas turned to Evelyn.
"My son reacted badly. He believed you were preparing to erase him from the family."
"He tried to let me die."
Thomas sighed.
"You have one witness with a financial interest. Missing footage. Questionable messages. A dead paralegal. This situation is more complicated than your emotions."
Evelyn realized what he was doing.
Creating reasonable doubt before any criminal case even existed.
"You taught him well."
"No," Thomas said. "You did."
The words landed perfectly.
He reminded Evelyn how many times she had excused Daniel.
How many scandals she had buried.
How many consequences she had purchased away.
Thomas slid a folder across the table.
Inside was a petition challenging Evelyn's competency.
Daniel claimed Evelyn had become paranoid, unstable, and vulnerable to manipulation by Maya.
Three physicians' names appeared in supporting documents.
Rebecca flipped through them.
"These evaluations are fraudulent."
Thomas smiled.
"Then challenge them."
Evelyn turned the last page.
A court hearing had already been scheduled.
If Daniel succeeded, a temporary conservator could freeze Evelyn's financial decisions.
Including her new trust.
Maya suddenly noticed the date on one attached medical report.
It was six months old.
Long before Daniel supposedly became concerned about Evelyn.
Meaning the attack had not started the plan.
The plan had started months earlier.
