Chapter 8 - THE OLD CRIME
Evelyn had spent twenty-eight years avoiding that question.
Now she finally told Maya and Rebecca the truth.
Thomas Vale had stolen money.
But he had not acted alone.
Charles Mercer had discovered the scheme before Evelyn did.
Instead of reporting Thomas, Charles demanded a share.
When Evelyn uncovered the fraud, Charles begged her to protect him.
Their company was young.
Their marriage was already collapsing.
Exposure would have destroyed both.
So Evelyn turned evidence over to prosecutors that implicated Thomas while keeping Charles's involvement hidden.
Thomas fled.
Charles survived.
Evelyn had protected her husband.
And in doing so, she had given Thomas the grievance he would later use to poison Daniel.
Maya was silent.
Rebecca looked furious.
"You let Thomas carry all of it."
"He was guilty."
"So was Charles."
"Yes."
Evelyn did not defend herself.
That mattered.
Daniel had expected denial.
Instead, Evelyn called a board meeting and disclosed the entire history herself.
The story damaged her reputation.
But it also stole Daniel's weapon.
Thomas responded within hours.
He released financial records showing Charles's role.
Evelyn had already confirmed them publicly.
The leak produced less damage than Thomas wanted.
Daniel changed direction.
He accused Evelyn of knowingly framing his biological father to protect her own family.
That claim was emotionally powerful.
It also contained enough truth to spread.
For the first time, employees protested outside Mercer headquarters.
Daniel stood among them.
Not shouting.
Listening.
Appearing wounded.
Thomas's strategy was becoming clear.
He did not need Evelyn convicted.
He needed her morally isolated.
Maya asked Evelyn whether Daniel knew his mother Laura had also participated in the fraud.
Evelyn froze.
"What?"
Rebecca found the old investigative files.
Laura Bennett had opened two shell-company accounts.
Her signatures appeared repeatedly.
Thomas had never told Daniel.
Neither had Evelyn.
Daniel believed Thomas had been the scapegoat and Laura an innocent victim destroyed by the scandal.
Maya understood immediately.
"If Daniel learns both his biological parents were involved, Thomas loses the story holding him together."
Evelyn nodded.
"But if I tell Daniel, he'll think I'm attacking his dead mother."
So they needed proof Daniel could discover himself.
Rebecca located an old bank archivist who remembered Laura.
The archivist agreed to meet.
He never arrived.
Instead, Evelyn received a package at the brownstone.
Inside was the archivist's old employee identification card.
And a handwritten message:
SOME HISTORY SHOULD STAY DEAD.
Then Maya turned the card over.
