Chapter 11 - THE CHILD SHE KEPT

After Laura died, Daniel had not gone directly into foster care.
Thomas had come back.
Secretly.
He had been in the United States for six weeks.
He knew Laura was dead.
He knew his son was alone.
And he chose not to take him.
Thomas was still wanted for financial crimes.
Taking Daniel would have exposed his location.
So Thomas disappeared again.
Evelyn learned the truth years later from a retired federal investigator.
She never told Daniel because she believed knowing his biological father had abandoned him would cause unnecessary pain.
Now Daniel understood that the story guiding his entire life had been false.
Thomas had told him Evelyn stole his family.
In reality, Thomas had saved himself.
Daniel punched the conference-room wall.
Not Thomas.
The wall.
He still controlled himself.
That worried Evelyn.
Thomas remained calm.
"I couldn't take you then."
"You could've tried."
"I would've gone to prison."
"So you left me."
"I survived so I could come back."
"Twenty-three years later?"
Thomas's voice hardened.
"Because Evelyn controlled everything around you."
Daniel looked at Evelyn.
"You knew."
"Yes."
"And you hid it."
"Yes."
Daniel laughed bitterly.
"Both of you built my life out of secrets."
He walked out.
For three days, no one knew where he was.
Thomas's alliance began collapsing.
Vale Systems board members received orders from Daniel freezing Thomas out of several accounts.
Thomas responded by suing his own son for breach of fiduciary duty.
The war had changed.
Evelyn saw an opportunity.
Rebecca warned her not to underestimate Daniel.
"He may hate Thomas now, but that doesn't make him loyal to you."
Rebecca was right.
Daniel returned on the fourth day with a new proposal.
He would testify against Thomas.
He would admit the forged competency documents.
He would identify the men involved in Maya's truck fire.
In exchange, Evelyn would give him ten percent of the company and refuse to cooperate with prosecutors on the allergy attack.
Maya stared at him.
"You still bargain like you're holding the winning hand."
Daniel looked at her.
"I am."
He placed a flash drive on the table.
It contained internal Mercer documents showing years of tax strategies that, if interpreted aggressively, could trigger a federal investigation.
Evelyn knew those transactions were lawful.
Proving that could take years.
Daniel understood leverage.
"Ten percent," he repeated.
Evelyn picked up the drive.
"No."
Daniel smiled faintly.
"Then ask Rebecca why her name appears in the offshore files."
Rebecca's face went completely still.
Evelyn turned toward her oldest friend.
May you like
Rebecca whispered, "He's not bluffing."
