Chapter 7 - THE MAN WHO RAN

Andrew Pike never boarded the plane.
Airport security footage showed him entering the terminal.
Then disappearing through a maintenance corridor.
Police began treating him as a possible participant in document fraud.
Thomas claimed he barely remembered Pike.
Daniel claimed he had never met him.
Maya found that hard to believe.
She began searching public business records.
Years of running a food truck had taught her something useful: people lied, paperwork usually did not.
Pike's small notary company once shared an address with a consulting firm.
That consulting firm had received payments from Vale Systems.
Rebecca traced additional transfers.
Small amounts.
Spread across years.
Never enough to trigger obvious suspicion.
Thomas had been rebuilding a network around Evelyn for more than a decade.
Evelyn felt something worse than fear.
Humiliation.
Daniel's college tuition.
His apartment.
His first company.
His legal settlements.
Had all of it been part of Thomas's long game?
She confronted Daniel privately.
"Did you ever love me?"
Daniel looked almost offended.
"Of course I did."
"Then why?"
His expression hardened.
"Because you never let me forget what I was."
"I called you my son."
"You bought everything I needed and expected gratitude to replace blood."
Evelyn stared at him.
Daniel continued.
"You made yourself the hero of my childhood. The wealthy woman who rescued the criminal's kid."
"I never called you that."
"You didn't have to."
For the first time, Evelyn saw something genuine beneath Daniel's manipulation.
Resentment.
Real resentment was more dangerous than greed.
Thomas had found it and cultivated it.
Daniel leaned closer.
"You think this is about forty-eight million dollars? That's the smallest part."
"What do you want?"
"The company."
"No."
"Then you'll lose it anyway."
That afternoon, three Mercer board members demanded an emergency meeting.
Someone had leaked internal emails suggesting Evelyn had secretly guaranteed risky loans.
The emails looked authentic.
Shareholders panicked.
Banks called again.
Rebecca determined that someone had accessed Evelyn's corporate account months earlier.
Daniel had been preparing both a legal attack and a corporate coup.
At the emergency board meeting, Daniel proposed himself as interim CEO.
He had enough nervous directors to make the vote close.
Then Evelyn noticed one director who should have supported her refusing to meet her eyes.
Samuel Grant.
Her oldest business partner.
After the meeting, Evelyn followed him into the hall.
"How much did they pay you?"
Samuel looked terrified.
"They didn't pay me."
"Then what?"
He swallowed.
"They showed me something."
"What?"
Samuel handed Evelyn a photograph.
It showed her late husband, Charles Mercer, standing beside Thomas Vale in 1998.
On the back was written:
