Chapter 10 - CLAIRE'S OWN GUILT

Claire wanted to become the victim.
Rebecca would not let her.
“You knew he was married.”
Claire looked away.
“Yes.”
“You knew I existed.”
“Yes.”
“You mocked Vanessa for confronting you.”
“Yes.”
“You bragged about money.”
“Yes.”
Rebecca sat across from her in mediation.
Then asked:
“Did you know he was using you for Northshore?”
“No.”
“I believe you.”
Claire looked up.
Rebecca continued:
“That doesn’t erase what you did know.”
There.
Claire had not forged records.
She had not structured the payments.
She had not created Adrian’s marriage.
But she had chosen secrecy.
Chosen arrogance.
Chosen to humiliate a coworker.
Chosen to treat Rebecca as irrelevant.
Claire finally said:
“I thought winning meant he picked me.”

Rebecca answered:
“He picked access.”
