Chapter 15 - FIVE THOUSAND

One year later, Claire worked at a smaller company.
Salary:
$8,200 a month.
Less glamour.
Less access.
No chairman calling at midnight.
She disclosed conflicts.
Documented meetings.
Hated compliance training less than she used to.
One afternoon, a junior employee complained about compensation.
“They only pay me five thousand.”
Claire froze.
The old conference room returned instantly.
Her own voice:
This company pays me FIVE THOUSAND a month.
But HE gives me TWELVE MILLION.
She almost laughed.
Instead she asked:
“What do you want to earn?”
The employee answered.
Claire helped her build a promotion plan.
Simple.
Boring.
Clean.
That evening, Claire passed a luxury handbag store.
She still owned the bag from the confrontation.
She had considered selling it.
Kept it instead.
Not as trophy.
Reminder.
Money could be real and still mean something false.
Attention could feel like love and still be leverage.
Public humiliation could be deserved in part and still be cruel.
Rebecca had taught her the hardest version of accountability:
You can be manipulated and still be responsible for what you chose.
Vanessa had taught her another:
The person you humiliate may be the one telling the truth.
And Adrian taught her the most expensive lesson.
Security offered by someone who benefits from your silence is not security.
It is a contract you may not realize you signed.
Claire went home.
Her phone buzzed.
Unknown number.
For one second her chest tightened.
Then she ignored it.
No secret hotel.
No hidden account.
No promise worth twelve million.
Just quiet.
May you like
For the first time in years, quiet felt expensive enough.
