Chapter 13 - LINDA'S LAST WORD

At sentencing, Linda asked to speak.
She looked at Claire.
“I treated you like an outsider.”
Claire said nothing.
Linda continued:
“I thought protecting my son meant helping him keep control.”
That was closer.
Then:
“I thought wives complain, husbands decide, and eventually everyone calms down.”
Claire looked at her.
“That’s not marriage.”
Linda lowered her eyes.
Frank did not apologize as cleanly.
He still believed his investments would have recovered.
Maybe they would have.
That did not matter.
Claire told him:
“You keep explaining the outcome you wanted as if it gave you permission to risk money that wasn’t yours.”
Frank had no answer.
Then Dean spoke.
“I was scared.”
Claire almost laughed.
Of debt.
Of failure.
Of disappointing his father.
Of losing status.
Of Claire finding out.
Fear.
Then she answered:
“So was I.”
Difference:
Claire did not forge anyone’s name.
Then Linda looked at her again.
“I’m sorry about the bathroom.”
Claire’s face hardened.
“Which part?”
Linda stared.
“The mirror.”
“No.”
Claire’s voice stayed calm.
“The part where your son hit me?”
Linda nodded.
“The part where you told me to clean it up?”
Another nod.
“The part where Frank handed him a beer?”
Linda began crying.
Claire continued:
“You didn’t freeze. You didn’t misunderstand. You joined him.”
That was what Claire needed named.
Not just the fraud.
The room.
May you like
The hierarchy.
The moment three people showed her exactly where they believed she belonged.
