Chapter 3 - THE ACCOUNT IN CLAIRE'S NAME

Police arrived first.
Then Claire’s bank fraud specialist.
Dean immediately changed tone.
“My wife is upset.”
Claire held out her arm.
Bruising already forming.
Broken mirror behind her.
Audio recording captured:
Dean’s shouting,
Linda’s dismissal,
Frank’s encouragement,
and the order to clean up.
No one could reduce it to “miscommunication.”
Dean was removed from the house under emergency domestic-violence procedures.
Linda and Frank protested.
Frank said:
“This is our son’s house.”
The deed said otherwise.
Jointly owned:
Dean and Claire.
That mattered.
Then Detective Mara Lewis asked Claire about the bank account.
Claire handed over the envelope.
Bennett Family Services LLC.
Rachel Monroe arrived from the bank’s fraud team the next morning.
She explained what they had confirmed.

Again:
Claire.
She stared.
“What equipment?”
Rachel looked at the records.
“No equipment purchases.”
Where did money go?
$117,000 to Frank.
$64,000 to Linda.
$89,000 to an investment platform.
$73,000 to cover old debt.
Remaining funds scattered.
Claire looked at Rachel.
“Why am I on this?”
“Because your income and home equity strengthened the application.”
Claire worked as a dental-office manager.
