Chapter 8 - DEAN COMES BACK WITH A LAWYER
Dean returned through counsel.
No direct contact.
Protective order in place.
He filed for temporary exclusive access to certain business records and claimed Claire had taken proprietary documents.
Then he filed for divorce.
Aggressive.
Strategic.
His petition alleged:
financial sabotage,
unauthorized recording,
emotional instability,
and interference with family business.
Claire laughed when she read it.
Then stopped.
Because Dean attached selected messages.
Claire:
I’m done with all of you.
Claire:
I swear I’ll destroy this family if you keep lying.
Real texts.
Sent after she discovered the guaranty.
Out of context, dramatic.
Then Dean’s attorney argued Claire had deliberately triggered police to gain leverage in divorce.
Possible narrative.
Then the keychain recording destroyed part of it.
The audio began before anyone knew police were coming.
It captured:
the question about paycheck,
the assault,
Linda’s comment,
Frank’s encouragement,
Dean’s commands.
No staged confrontation.
No bait.
Just reality.
Then Dean changed approach.
He admitted pushing Claire.
Called it:
“A moment of panic.”
He denied slamming her intentionally into the mirror.
The broken mirror said little about intent.
So prosecutors did not overclaim.
Domestic violence case stood on force, injury, and recording.
Financial case stood separately.
Good.
Then Dean’s lawyer made a smarter argument.
Claire knew Frank had financial trouble.
True.
Claire knew Linda and Frank moved in because money was tight.
True.
Claire had once said:
“If they need help, we help.”
Also true.
Dean claimed that was broad consent.
Claire’s attorney asked:
“Broad consent to what?”
Dean answered:
“Family support.”
“Loans in her name?”
Silence.
“Forged signatures?”
“No.”
“Her retirement listed as collateral?”
“No.”
There.
Helping family was not consent to hidden liability.
