Chapter 6 - LINDA'S RULE

Linda’s role had always looked domestic.

Dinner.

Comments.

Mockery.

But financial messages showed she had been strategizing too.

Text to Dean:

Don’t let Claire see statements until your father gets us whole.

Another:

She panics about money. You have to manage her.

Then:

Marriage means shared risk whether she likes it or not.

Claire read that twice.

That was Linda’s philosophy.

Consent was weakness.

Family loyalty meant silent exposure.

Then an older message after Claire once questioned a credit-card charge:

LINDA:

You need to stop explaining everything to her.

DEAN:

She’s my wife.

LINDA:

Exactly. Not your auditor.

Claire laughed bitterly.

She had been expected to share liability without asking questions.

Then Linda defended herself during deposition.

“I never signed anything for Claire.”

True.

“I never told Dean to forge her signature.”

Also true.

Then Claire’s attorney asked:

“Did you know he was using Claire’s credit?”

Linda paused.

“I knew they were married.”

Not an answer.

“Did you know?”

“Yes.”

“Did you tell Claire?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because Dean said he had it handled.”

There.

Linda’s participation was not the technical fraud.

It was knowledge and benefit.

Then investigators found something else.

Linda had kept a handwritten ledger in her purse.

Not because she was trying to expose anyone.

Because she tracked what Dean “owed” his parents.

$22,000 condo debt.

$18,500 medical bills.

$31,000 brokerage loss support.

$12,000 jewelry.

$9,000 Frank’s tax bill.

At the bottom:

TOTAL FAMILY ADVANCE: $92,500.

Claire stared.

“Advance from who?”

Linda had written:

Dean/Claire household.

There.

She knew exactly whose financial life was absorbing the losses.

Then another note:

Claire can be reimbursed after Frank recovers principal.

Reimbursed.

Meaning Linda knew Claire had not agreed in advance.

You do not reimburse someone for money they knowingly chose to invest unless terms exist.

There were no terms.

The ledger did not prove forgery.

It proved awareness.
