Chapter 1 - YOU DON’T BELONG HERE

Tyler Carter was already standing over four-year-old Ethan when Amanda Whitman opened the front door.
The nine-year-old boy gripped a short wooden stick with both hands.
Ethan crawled across the polished marble floor, one sock missing, dinosaur pajamas twisted around one knee.
Tyler swung.
The stick struck Ethan’s upper arm.
Ethan screamed.
Amanda’s suitcase slipped from her hand.
“ETHAN!”
Tyler swung again.
The stick hit Ethan’s shoulder.
Ethan curled tightly against the floor and raised both arms over his head.
“You don’t belong here!” Tyler shouted.
Amanda crossed the room before she had time to think.
She grabbed Tyler by the shoulder, yanked him away from Ethan, and knocked the stick from his hands.
It clattered across the marble.
Then Amanda dropped beside her son.
“Baby. Look at me.”
Ethan was crying so hard he could barely breathe.
His arm and shoulder were red.
No blood.
No visible serious injury.
Amanda pulled him against her chest.
Then Richard stormed toward her.
“DON’T TOUCH TYLER!”
Amanda looked up slowly.
For one absurd second she wondered if she had heard wrong.
“He was hitting your son.”
Richard said nothing.
That silence hurt more than yelling.
Brooke Carter stepped beside him in a fitted red dress and pulled Tyler close.
She looked Amanda up and down.
“Control your own kid.”
Amanda stood carefully, keeping Ethan behind her.
She looked from Brooke to Richard.
Richard moved half a step closer to Brooke.
Protective.
Instinctive.
The answer arrived before the confession.
Brooke folded her arms.
“Richard takes care of us.”
Amanda laughed once.
Not because it was funny.
Then she slapped Brooke across the face.
Brooke staggered backward, stunned.
Amanda stepped closer.
“You don’t even know whose money—”
Brooke’s expression changed.
Amanda finished through clenched teeth.
“—he uses to keep you, do you?”
Brooke froze.
Richard went pale.
Tyler looked confused.
Amanda pulled Ethan against her side.
Then looked directly at her husband.
Richard could not meet her eyes.
Amanda’s voice dropped.
“How much of my money did you spend on them?”
Brooke turned toward Richard.
“My money?”
Richard whispered:
“Amanda, not in front of the kids.”
Amanda stared at him.
“No.”
Then she looked around her own living room.
At Brooke’s overnight bag beside the sofa.
At Tyler’s shoes by the fireplace.
At a framed photograph on the side table she had never seen before.
Richard.
Brooke.
Tyler.
All three smiling.
Then Ethan whispered into her shirt:
May you like
“Mommy… they’ve been sleeping here.”
Amanda stopped breathing.
