Chapter 18 - THE HOUSE BROOKE PROMISED

The next morning, Amanda’s attorney found the second problem.

Brooke had filed documents in family court before disappearing.

Amanda’s address appeared repeatedly.

Not merely as the place Tyler might stay overnight.

As:

PROPOSED STABLE RESIDENCE FOR MINOR CHILD.

Amanda read the phrase twice.

“Absolutely not.”

Her attorney continued.

Brooke’s filing claimed Tyler had an established support network involving Richard and Amanda.

It described Amanda’s property as:

A long-term family residence available to Tyler when necessary.

Amanda’s anger sharpened.

Available?

Her house had become evidence in someone else’s custody argument.

The same house Brooke had once entered during Amanda’s absence.

The same house where Tyler had told Ethan he did not belong.

Now Brooke had represented it to a court as a home for Tyler.

Without asking Amanda.

Without even telling her.

Richard read the filing.

“I didn’t know.”

“I believe you.”

That surprised both of them.

Amanda continued.

“Which means Brooke did this alone.”

Her attorney discovered more.

Brooke’s filing emphasized Amanda’s financial resources.

The medical-property portfolio.

The house.

Richard’s co-parenting relationship with Ethan.

Even Ethan’s school district.

Brooke was constructing a legal picture in which Tyler had access to an affluent, stable extended household.

Except it did not exist.

Amanda and Richard were divorced.

Brooke and Richard were no longer together.

Tyler had never lived with Amanda.

The boys had no active relationship.

The filing turned boundaries into blank spaces Brooke could fill.

Then Tyler’s therapist called.

With permission from the emergency child representative, she confirmed something important.

Tyler had known for six months that Gavin existed.

Brooke had told him:

Gavin wants to take you away from everyone you love.

But Tyler had secretly searched for Gavin online.

He found a business profile.

Marriage records.

A photograph.

Gavin had remarried.

He had a nine-year-old daughter.

Tyler became furious.

“Another kid.”

Amanda understood immediately.

Four years earlier Richard had taught Tyler that Ethan was the child standing between him and a father.

Now Gavin had another child too.

History was walking toward the same wound.

Amanda sat with Tyler.

“This is important.”

“What?”

“His daughter did not take your father from you.”

Tyler looked away.

“I know.”

“Knowing and feeling are different.”

He said nothing.

“You are not allowed to turn another child into proof that you lost something.”

Tyler’s jaw tightened.

“I said I know.”

Amanda let it rest.

Then he whispered:

“Mom said Gavin replaced me.”

There it was.

Again.

Amanda called Brooke’s number.

Still disconnected.

Police had listed her as a missing adult, but evidence suggested she had left voluntarily.

Her car was found at an airport parking structure.

No ticket under her name.

Then Amanda received a voicemail from an unknown number.

Brooke.

“Amanda, listen to me before you judge me.”

Amanda put it on speaker.

Brooke’s voice continued.

“Gavin will make himself look reasonable. That’s what he does.”

A pause.

“I need forty-eight hours.”

Amanda frowned.

“For what?”

The recording continued.

“Richard owes Tyler. And whether you like it or not, your house is the safest place he has.”

Then Brooke said something that made Richard go pale.

“If Amanda refuses, remind her what happens to Richard’s custody time if the court sees the messages I saved.”

The voicemail ended.

Amanda slowly turned toward Richard.

“What messages?”

Richard looked sick.

May you like

And once again, the past had arrived carrying receipts.
