Chapter 14 - THE FIRST DINNER BACK

Two years after the incident, Richard attended dinner at Amanda’s house for Ethan’s sixth birthday.
Not overnight.
Not husband.
Guest.
That distinction mattered.
Ethan asked for pizza.
Amanda ordered it.
Richard brought a dinosaur book.
No expensive performance.
Then Ethan asked:
“Can Dad sit there?”
He pointed to Richard’s old chair.
Amanda paused.
Then:
“If he wants.”
Richard sat.
For a moment, everyone remembered the old family shape.
Then Ethan knocked over his drink.
Juice spread across the table.
Richard jumped up for towels.
Amanda did too.
Their hands touched.
Neither reacted.
Ordinary.
Then Ethan said:
“Tyler wrote me again.”
Richard froze.
Amanda said:
“You don’t have to talk about it now.”
Ethan shrugged.
“He says he’s sorry.”
Then:
“He says he thought this was his house.”
Richard looked down.
Amanda watched him.
Ethan continued:
“But it’s Mom’s house.”
Amanda corrected gently:
“It’s your home too.”
Ethan smiled.
Different word.
House can be titled.
Home can be shared.
Then Richard said:
“I told Tyler things I shouldn’t have.”
Ethan looked at him.
“Why?”
Richard answered carefully.
“Because I wanted him to like me.”
Ethan thought.
Then:
“You could’ve just played dinosaurs.”
Amanda almost cried.
So simple.
No apartment.
No tuition.
No secret family.
Just presence.
Richard laughed softly.
“You’re right.”
Then dinner continued.
May you like
No reconciliation.
But a father learned to sit in a chair without pretending he owned the room.
