Chapter 10 - CLAIRE'S OWN BLIND SPOT
Claire was not innocent of every family problem.
For years, she treated Madison as the creative younger sister.
Marketing.
Weddings.
Social media.
Events.
Claire made the serious decisions.
Budgets.
Debt.
Capital projects.
Staffing.
Madison resented it.
She had asked for a larger management role twice.
Claire said:
“Later.”
Then forgot.
Madison told her:
“You always thought I was the kid.”
Claire answered:
“You slept with my husband.”
“Yes.”
“That does not become my fault because I underestimated you.”
“No.”
Madison took the hit.
Then said:
“But I was already angry before Ryan.”
That mattered.
Ryan did not invent Madison’s resentment.
He used it.
He told Madison:
“Claire will never let you run the resort unless something forces change.”
Madison believed him because part of her already did.
Claire saw the family dynamic more clearly.
Claire also reviewed years of management evaluations.
Madison had not imagined being sidelined.
Three years earlier, an outside consultant wrote:
Madison demonstrates strong guest-development instincts but is underutilized in strategic planning.
Claire had read it.
Then done nothing.
Why?
Because their father had trained Claire for operations.
He had trained Madison for hospitality and branding.
After he died, Claire preserved those roles without questioning them.
Madison eventually stopped asking.
That resentment did not justify deceit.
But it was not invented by Ryan.
Claire apologized for one thing.
“I should have taken you seriously sooner.”
Madison started crying.
Claire raised a hand.
“That is not forgiveness.”
“I know.”
“And it does not make any of this my fault.”
“I know.”
“But that part? I did it.”
Madison nodded.
For the first time, accountability moved in both directions without becoming equivalence.
She had loved her sister.
She had not always respected her.
