Chapter 6 - THE TIMELINE
Grace built the timeline.
Eight months ago:
Ryan and Madison’s affair began after a regional tourism conference.
The affair timeline also had one disputed month.
Ryan claimed the relationship turned physical eight months earlier.
Madison said seven.
Why did one month matter?
Because Ryan downloaded the shareholder agreement seven months ago.
If the affair began first, financial planning happened after emotional betrayal.
If the planning began first, Claire’s lawyers could argue the romance and transaction became intertwined from the start.
Phone records showed:
late-night calls,
hotel receipts,
shared travel,
and private messages.
The evidence could establish closeness.
Not precisely when intimacy began.
Grace refused to build the case around it.
Claire wanted to.
“Why not?”
“Because we do not need to prove which betrayal was born first.”
That was hard to hear.
Claire wanted chronology to explain motive.
Did Ryan sleep with Madison because they were planning together?
Did they plan together because they fell in love?
The law did not need an answer.
The conflict existed either way.
Sometimes a fact could remain emotionally central and legally unnecessary.
Seven months ago:
Ryan downloaded the old shareholder agreement.
Six months ago:
Madison met with Harbor State Bank about financing a possible family-share acquisition.
Five months ago:
Ryan began telling Claire she looked exhausted.
Four months ago:
Northstar made a $25.5 million offer.
Claire rejected it.
Three months ago:
Ryan prepared a memo analyzing management-exit pricing.
Two months ago:
Madison’s bank issued preliminary financing.
Six weeks ago:
Northstar increased to $31.8 million.
Five weeks ago:
Ryan did not circulate it to Claire.
Four weeks ago:
Ryan and Madison discussed Claire taking “a healing leave.”
Two weeks ago:
Ryan prepared the separation-and-transition package.
Three days ago:
Northstar requested updated shareholder support.
Today:
Claire caught them together.
Coincidence?
Lauren said yes.
Grace said pattern.
The strongest email surfaced.
RYAN TO MADISON:
If Claire steps out before Northstar firms, we can keep this from turning into a family bloodbath.
MADISON:
She’ll never sell to me if she knows the new number.
RYAN:
Then timing matters.
Claire read it twice.
Madison’s lawyer argued:
“Timing in shareholder transactions always matters.”
True.
Then another email.
MADISON:
I hate doing this to her.
RYAN:
Then think about what we’re saving.
That line changed everything.
