Chapter 11 - RYAN'S MONEY

Ryan’s finances revealed another motive.

He had invested heavily in a side hospitality project.

A boutique lodge development called Harbor Pines.

He personally guaranteed:

$1.1 million

in debt.

Construction delays pushed the project into trouble.

Harbor Pines was not a fake side project.

Ryan had invested in it before the affair.

The lodge site was real.

Permits real.

Construction real.

The project simply went badly.

A contractor bankruptcy caused delay.

Interest costs increased.

One investor withdrew.

Ryan’s $1.1 million guaranty became dangerous.

Claire asked:

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

Ryan answered:

“Because it was my investment.”

“We were married.”

“You had the resort. I had Harbor Pines.”

“That is not how marriage works when the debt can hit marital assets.”

Lauren corrected:

“The guaranty was limited largely to Ryan’s separate investment interests.”

Largely.

Not entirely.

Claire had not been exposed to the full $1.1 million.

But the pressure explained why Ryan liked a future where Madison held a larger income-producing stake.

He could tell himself:

the resort stayed family-owned,

Madison gained authority,

Harbor Pines survived,

and he built a new life.

Everyone won.

Except Claire.

That was how self-serving plans became morally comfortable.

The person paying the price was converted into someone who supposedly wanted to leave anyway.

If Madison bought Claire’s shares, Ryan expected to become:

financial adviser,

future spouse,

and indirect beneficiary of Madison’s increased resort income.

There was no secret contract giving him millions.

No guaranteed payout.

But his guaranty of Madison’s acquisition loan aligned his interests with Claire’s cheap exit.

Ryan defended himself.

“I believed Madison was the better long-term operator.”

Claire stared.

“You were married to me.”

“That doesn’t make you right about the company.”

“No.”

“You wanted Northstar on the table.”

“I wanted options.”

“You were going to sell Dad’s legacy.”

“No. I was going to decide with full information.”

Ryan looked away.

Again, consent.

Again, information.

The story kept returning to the same thing.
