Chapter 12 - THE CHILDHOOD HOUSE

The sisters met at the resort without lawyers.
Not alone.
Grace waited nearby.
Madison’s counsel too.
They sat in the old lakeside dining room their father had renovated himself.
Claire said:
“Did you ever love me?”
Madison started crying.
“Yes.”
“That’s worse.”
“I know.”
“Did you love Ryan?”
“Yes.”
Claire laughed through tears.
“Also worse.”
Madison said:
“I thought I could have both.”
“What?”
“You as my sister. Him. The resort.”
Claire stared.
Madison continued:
“I kept telling myself if you left the company on your own, then the business part wasn’t stealing.”
“But you were hiding the offer.”
“Yes.”
“And sleeping with my husband.”
“Yes.”
“So nothing about it was on my own.”
Madison closed her eyes.
“No.”
That was the first full admission.
Not legal.
Emotional.
Claire did not hug her.
Did not forgive her.
She stood.
“Then now you get to find out what you have without me.”
Madison looked terrified.

It was the loss of the relationship Madison assumed would survive anything.
