Chapter 12 - ROBERT'S PART
Robert had his own accountability.
The slap could not disappear just because Daniel betrayed them both.
Claire filed no criminal complaint against her father.
But she refused to pretend it was nothing.
Robert apologized.
First badly.
“I was shocked.”
Claire said:
“That explains it.”
Robert stopped.
Then tried again.
“I hit you because I thought you were embarrassing me.”
Claire looked at him.
“Yes.”
“I was wrong.”
“Yes.”
He paid for the ruined dress because Claire had bought it.
Claire almost refused.
Grace said:
“Replacement cost is not forgiveness.”
Robert also entered counseling after Claire told him:
Claire also learned Robert had signed one broader-than-expected interview release.
Unlike Claire, he had not read it carefully.
It allowed:
editing,
promotion,
and commercial use of his wedding interview footage.
Robert was furious.
Grace asked:
“Did you sign it?”
“Yes.”
“Were you pressured?”
“No.”
“Did Daniel lie about what it was?”
“He said wedding documentary.”
The document title said:
WEDDING DOCUMENTARY PARTICIPANT RELEASE.
Not series.
Robert had a stronger misrepresentation argument about context.
But he also had responsibility for signing without reading.
Robert hated that.
Claire smiled for the first time during legal review.
“You tell me to read contracts.”
Robert glared.
“Not now.”
It was a small family reversal.
Useful because it reminded Claire that victims of deception could still have ordinary responsibility without becoming responsible for the deception itself.
“Daniel knew exactly how to create fights between us because we already had them.”
That hurt more than public humiliation.
Daniel had exploited a real fracture.
