Chapter 6 - ROBERT'S HUMILIATION
Robert’s role made the betrayal worse.
He had agreed to wedding interviews.
Daniel asked him questions about:
fatherhood,
Laura,
Claire’s childhood,
marriage.
Robert thought the footage was for Claire’s wedding film.
He cried during one interview.
Spoke about Laura’s final months.
Admitted he and Claire barely spoke for a year after Laura died.
Daniel later included parts of that interview in the development reel.
Robert did not know.
At first Robert blamed Claire for the public explosion because he saw:
ruined dress,
stunned guests,
Daniel appearing calm.
Then Claire showed him the clearance chart.
His face changed.
“You used Laura?”
Daniel said:
“It was family context.”
Robert shoved a chair aside.
Claire stepped between them.
“No.”
Robert looked at her.
“He sold your mother.”
“No one hits anyone else.”
Robert stared at his daughter.
The irony landed.
He had slapped her minutes earlier.
His hand lowered.
Claire said:
“You want to help me? Start by not becoming another problem I have to manage.”
Robert backed away.
For the first time that day, he listened.
Robert’s slap also became public immediately because dozens of guests saw it.
That embarrassed Claire almost as much as Daniel’s secret.
A cousin uploaded nothing.
No viral video.
The family actually respected Claire’s request not to post.
Still, everyone in the hall knew.
Robert wanted to leave.
Claire told him to stay.
“Why?”
“Because you don’t get to hit me and disappear before apologizing.”
Robert looked stunned.
Not because he believed the slap was justified after learning the truth.
Because Claire had never spoken to him that way in front of others.
Robert had always been the authority figure.
Even after Claire became an adult.
The wedding confrontation broke two power structures at once.
Daniel’s hidden manipulation.
Robert’s assumption that anger entitled him to physical reaction.
