Chapter 9 - THE $18,000 DRESS FIGHT

Two months before the wedding, Robert discovered the dress cost $18,000.

Claire had paid for most of it herself.

Robert still exploded.

“You’re spending eighteen thousand dollars on something you wear once?”

Claire shouted back.

“You spent forty grand restoring a car you don’t drive!”

Daniel stood between them.

Calm.

Patient.

Later Claire thanked him.

She thought he prevented a disaster.

The production schedule showed:

FAMILY COST CONVERSATION — target Tuesday.

Daniel had told Robert that morning:

Claire may need help with final wedding invoices.

Then told Claire:

Your dad wants to review the wedding budget.

Neither statement was fully false.

Together they created confrontation.

A freelance field producer captured audio from an approved wedding-planning interview happening nearby.

Claire asked Grace:

“Is that illegal?”

“Probably not by itself. You were participating in a recorded planning session.”

“But he created the fight.”

“That is ethically ugly. Civil liability depends on representations and use.”

Again, horror did not translate neatly into a criminal statute.

Daniel understood gray zones.
