Chapter 1 - THE CALL LAUREN DIDN'T ANSWER

Daniel Carter knew something was wrong before the doctor said the word pneumonia.

Ethan had been sick for three days.

At first it looked ordinary.

A fever.

A cough.

A boy insisting he was fine because his class had a science fair on Friday.

Then Ethan stopped eating.

Then he became too tired to argue.

By the time Daniel carried him through the emergency-room doors at two in the morning, his eight-year-old son was struggling for every breath.

Daniel sat beside the hospital bed in a dark shirt and trousers, one hand wrapped around Ethan’s small fingers while an oxygen mask covered most of the boy’s face.

“Dad?”

“I’m here.”

“Mom coming?”

Daniel looked at his phone.

Six unanswered calls.

Three texts.

LAUREN, CALL ME.

ETHAN IS IN THE ER.

PLEASE.

He did not know where his wife was.

That sentence had become normal enough to frighten him.

Lauren Carter had spent the last year becoming harder to reach.

First came work dinners.

Then weekend conferences.

Then sudden “girls’ trips.”

Then the expensive beige luggage she bought without mentioning any destination.

Daniel had asked.

She called him controlling.

He apologized.

That was how the marriage worked now.

Lauren changed.

Daniel apologized for noticing.

The doctor returned.

“Mr. Carter, Ethan’s oxygen is stabilizing, but we’re admitting him overnight.”

Daniel nodded.

“Is he going to be okay?”

“We expect so. But he needs monitoring.”

Ethan squeezed his fingers.

“Mom?”

Daniel looked at the clock.

3:11 a.m.

Then his phone rang.

Lauren.

He answered instantly.

“Lauren!”

Her voice was annoyed.

“What?”

“Your son’s in the hospital!”

A pause.

Then background noise.

Airport announcements.

Daniel’s stomach dropped.

“Where are you?”

“Daniel, I can’t do this right now.”

“Ethan can’t breathe.”

Ethan heard his name.

His eyes opened wider.

Daniel turned away slightly, but the room was too small.

“Come home.”

Lauren sighed.

“Stop calling. I’m done with your sick kid.”

The words seemed to stop the air.

Daniel stared at the wall.

Then he heard a man’s voice beside her.

“Lauren, we’re boarding.”

Jason Blake.

Daniel knew the name.

Too well.

Lauren hung up.

Ethan had heard everything.

The boy began crying behind the oxygen mask.

“Mom chose him over me?”

Daniel turned back.

For one second, he looked destroyed.

Then something in his face changed.

Not rage.

Not yet.

Calculation.

He sat beside Ethan.

“No.”

Ethan sniffled.

“She did.”

Daniel gripped his hand.

“She made a choice tonight.”

“That’s the same.”

Daniel did not lie.

“Yeah.”

He looked down at the phone.

Then at the message he had received thirty minutes earlier.

FROM JASON:

SHE BOUGHT THE MIAMI TICKETS. SHE THINKS I’M GOING WITH HER.

Daniel stared at it.

He had spent four months waiting for Lauren to make exactly this choice.

He had hated every day of it.

Now the moment had arrived.

And his son had paid the emotional price.

Daniel typed one sentence.

DO IT.

Then deleted the draft.

Not yet.

He put the phone away.

“Dad?”

“Yes?”

“Are you mad?”

Daniel looked at Ethan.

“Yes.”

“At Mom?”

“Yes.”

“At me?”

“No.”

“Promise?”

“Promise.”

That was the only promise Daniel intended to keep simple.

Outside the hospital window, dawn began turning the city gray.

And hundreds of miles away, Lauren Carter boarded a plane to Miami with a man she believed had chosen her over everything.

She did not know Jason Blake had already chosen someone else.
