Chapter 2 - THE MAN LAUREN TRUSTED TOO QUICKLY

Jason Blake met Lauren nine months earlier at a hotel bar in Chicago.
At least, that was what Lauren believed.
The truth began two months before that.
Daniel found the first evidence of the affair before the affair technically existed.
A message on Lauren’s laptop.
Not romantic.
Financial.
She had been discussing a home-equity line with someone using the name J. Blake.
Daniel assumed it was a banker.
Then he found a second message.
IF YOU LEAVE DANIEL, YOU WON’T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT MONEY AGAIN.
Daniel did not confront her.
That surprised even him.
He hired a private investigator.
The investigator came back with a stranger result.
Jason Blake was not a banker.
He was a corporate consultant with a history of working fraud cases for law firms.
He had no known connection to Lauren.
Yet.
Daniel called him.
Jason nearly hung up.
Then Daniel said:
“My wife has your name in financial messages.”
Jason went silent.
That was the beginning.
Jason had been contacted by Lauren first.
She wanted help moving marital assets before filing for divorce.
She had found him through a referral.
Jason had not agreed to anything illegal.
But he saw enough to realize Lauren was hiding more than dissatisfaction.
She wanted to transfer money from Daniel’s family business accounts.
Not millions.
Enough to matter.
Daniel’s father had died three years earlier and left Daniel a controlling interest in Carter Medical Supply, a regional company that made hospital distribution equipment.
Lauren had no direct ownership.
But she did have spousal claims to some marital assets.
And access.
More access than Daniel realized.
Jason told Daniel:
“She thinks I can help her position for divorce.”
Daniel asked:
“Can you?”
“Yes.”
“Will you?”
“No.”
Then Daniel asked the question that changed everything.
“Will you let her think you will?”
Jason stared at him.
“That’s dangerous.”
“I know.”
“Emotionally.”
“I know.”
“Legally.”
“I know.”
“Why?”
Daniel looked at the photographs of Lauren leaving restaurants with other men over the previous year.
Not just Jason.
Different men.
Different lies.
Then he said:
“Because I need to know whether she’s leaving me or setting up to take Ethan too.”
Jason refused at first.
Then Daniel showed him a draft custody memo Lauren had saved.
Primary custody requested.
Daniel described as “emotionally rigid.”
Ethan described as “medically fragile and overly dependent on father.”
Jason read the last phrase twice.
“Your son has asthma?”
“Yes.”
“She’s using it?”
Daniel’s face hardened.
Jason agreed to continue contact.
Not romance.
Not at first.
He would gather financial evidence and document intent.
Then Lauren escalated.
She flirted.
Jason told Daniel.
Daniel said:
“Do not touch her.”
Jason agreed.
Then one night, Lauren kissed him.
Jason pushed her away.
She apologized.
Then tried again the next week.
Daniel nearly ended the arrangement.
Jason said:
“If I disappear now, she’ll know.”
Daniel hated him for being right.
So Jason became the lover Lauren believed she had chosen.
He never slept with her.
He created hotel receipts, staged photographs, and allowed just enough intimacy to sustain the lie.
Daniel felt sick every time.
But then Lauren said something in a recorded conversation that kept him in the game.
“If I get Ethan, Daniel will fold. He can’t live without that kid.”
Jason asked:
“You’d use your son like that?”
Lauren laughed.
“Everyone uses what they have.”
Jason sent the recording to Daniel.
Daniel listened once.
Then never again.
Now, in Miami, Lauren leaned into Jason’s arm as they entered a luxury hotel.
“We’re finally free.”
Jason forced a smile.
He looked at her luggage.
Then at his phone.
Daniel had not replied to the last update.
Jason knew Ethan was in the hospital.
He also knew Lauren had heard and still boarded.
That changed something in him too.
He checked them into the suite.
Waited until Lauren fell asleep.
Then quietly packed.
Before dawn, Jason left the room.
No note.
No explanation.
Only one thing left behind:
a hotel key card placed on top of Lauren’s suitcase.
By the time she woke, he was already at the airport.
Jason boarded the first flight out.
As the plane lifted over the ocean, he called Daniel.
Daniel answered beside Ethan’s hospital bed.
Jason looked out the window.
“It’s done.”
Daniel slowly looked at his sleeping son.
May you like
Then Lauren’s name appeared on Jason’s phone.
He rejected the call.
