Chapter 8 - THE DEAD MAN'S PLAN

Charles Carter had not stolen from Ethan.

He had moved money.

That distinction mattered.

Before dying, Charles believed the medical trust was too exposed.

Lauren had co-signatory rights.

Rebecca had portal access.

Daniel was distracted by company succession.

So Charles created a shadow reserve.

He used LMC Wellness.

He used Jason Blake’s dormant compliance identity without Jason’s knowledge.

Illegal?

Possibly fraudulent documentation.

Protective intent?

Maybe.

Good governance?

Absolutely not.

Charles moved $250,000 into hidden accounts intended to remain for Ethan.

Then died before cleaning the structure.

Elaine knew part of it.

Not all.

After Charles’s death, someone discovered the system and began using it for personal transfers.

The legitimate hidden reserve and later theft became mixed.

Daniel stared at his father’s old notes.

“Why does everyone in this family think secrecy is a financial instrument?”

Elaine answered quietly:

“Because your father never trusted courts to move fast enough.”

Daniel looked at her.

“Or people.”

“Yes.”

That too.

Then investigators separated the transactions.

Charles-directed reserve:

$250,000.

Legitimate Lauren reimbursements:

$96,000.

Unexplained:

$266,000.

Not six hundred anymore.

Still serious.

Then one recipient emerged.

A real brokerage account.

Not Jason’s fake account.

Owned by:

Lauren Carter.

Balance:

$141,000.

Lauren stared.

“That is mine.”

Daniel’s face hardened.

“From Ethan’s trust?”

“I moved it.”

Finally.

“Why?”

She looked at Monica.

Then decided to answer.

“Because I was leaving you.”

Daniel stared.

“I needed money.”

“You took Ethan’s.”

“I thought it was marital family money.”

“It had his name on it.”

“It was overfunded.”

The sentence destroyed whatever sympathy Daniel had left in that moment.

Lauren saw.

She tried again.

“I intended to repay it after settlement.”

Rebecca laughed bitterly.

“Everyone intends to repay family money.”

Lauren snapped:

“Stay out of this.”

Rebecca looked at her.

“You asked me for access.”

“For Ethan’s bills.”

“And then used the portal.”

“Yes.”

Daniel whispered:

“You stole from our son.”

Lauren’s face crumpled.

Not because the accusation was false.

Because it was finally simple enough to say.

Then she said:

“You used Jason to entrap me.”

“Yes.”

“You recorded me.”

“Yes.”

“You built a custody case before I knew there was one.”

“Yes.”

Both had crossed lines.

Not equal lines.

Still lines.

Lauren looked at him.

“We destroyed this marriage together.”

Daniel answered quietly:

“No.”

She stared.

“I neglected it. I doubted you. I used Jason.”

He continued:

“But you told our son you were done with him and took his money.”

Silence.

“Those are yours.”

Lauren cried.

For once, he did not comfort her.

Then Richard found the remaining unexplained money.

$125,000.

Transferred to a private education account.

Beneficiary:

Sophie Carter.

Rebecca’s daughter.

Daniel turned slowly toward his sister.

Rebecca’s face went white.

“I didn’t.”

No one spoke.

The family scandal widened again.
