Chapter 11 - THE FIRST VISIT

Lauren’s first supervised visit happened six weeks after Miami.

She arrived early.

No expensive outfit.

No gifts.

That was smart.

Ethan sat across from her in a child-services room with a therapist nearby.

Daniel watched from behind glass.

Lauren said:

“Hi.”

Ethan said nothing.

She tried again.

“I’m glad you’re better.”

Nothing.

Then Ethan asked:

“Did you pick Jason because I get sick?”

Lauren’s face broke.

“No.”

“You said sick kid.”

“I know.”

“Do you hate when I’m sick?”

“No.”

“Then why say that?”

She cried.

“Because I was angry at your dad and I wanted to hurt him.”

Ethan looked confused.

“But you hurt me.”

Lauren covered her mouth.

“Yes.”

That was the truth.

No excuse.

Then he asked:

“Did you steal my hospital money?”

Lauren looked at the therapist.

The therapist nodded slightly.

“Yes.”

Ethan’s eyes filled.

“Why?”

“I was scared your dad would control all the money after we divorced.”

“So you took mine.”

“Yes.”

Silence.

Lauren continued:

“I paid it back.”

“That doesn’t make it not happened.”

Daniel nearly cried behind the glass.

Ethan had learned consequence too early.

Lauren nodded.

“You’re right.”

Then she said something Daniel did not expect.

“I thought being your mother meant I could make decisions about anything connected to you.”

Ethan stared.

“That’s dumb.”

Lauren laughed through tears.

“Yes.”

Then:

“I’m learning.”

The visit lasted twenty-seven minutes.

Ethan ended it.

Lauren accepted.

No guilt.

Progress.

Afterward, Daniel met her in the parking lot.

For the first time since court, they stood without lawyers.

Lauren looked exhausted.

“You happy?”

“No.”

“Really?”

“Yes.”

She laughed bitterly.

“You got Ethan.”

“He’s not a prize.”

“You know what I mean.”

Daniel looked at her.

“No. I’m trying not to.”

Then Lauren said:

“You loved trapping me.”

He flinched.

“No.”

“You did.”

“I loved knowing what you were doing.”

“That’s the same.”

Maybe partly.

Daniel admitted:

“I was afraid if I confronted you, you’d lie.”

“I would have.”

The honesty startled him.

Lauren continued:

“I was already lying.”

Silence.

Then:

“But Jason made me believe I had another life waiting.”

Daniel looked at her.

“He didn’t create that desire.”

“No.”

Good.

They could finally separate manipulation from choice.

Then Lauren asked:

“Did he ever care about me?”

Daniel could not answer for Jason.

“Ask him.”

She laughed softly.

“I did.”

“What did he say?”

“He said he cared enough to hate what he was doing.”

Daniel stared.

That sounded like Jason.

Then Lauren said:

“I don’t want him.”

“Good.”

“I don’t want you either.”

Daniel almost smiled.

“Also good.”

That surprised her.

Maybe the marriage was finally dying honestly.

Then she said:

“I want Ethan.”

Daniel’s face hardened.

Lauren corrected:

“I want a relationship with Ethan.”

May you like

Better.

That word choice mattered.
