Chapter 3 - THE WOMAN ALONE IN MIAMI

Lauren woke to silence.

Not peaceful silence.

Wrong silence.

Jason’s suitcase was gone.

His shoes were gone.

The bathroom counter was empty except for one wrapped hotel soap.

At first she thought he had gone for coffee.

Then she saw the key card.

One card.

His phone went straight to voicemail.

Lauren ran to the window.

A plane lifted in the distance.

Ridiculous coincidence.

Still, panic hit.

“JASON?!”

She called again.

Rejected.

Again.

Rejected.

Then Daniel called.

Lauren answered so fast she nearly dropped the phone.

“What did you do?”

Daniel’s voice was calm.

“Ethan is awake.”

She froze.

“What?”

“His fever is down.”

“Daniel—”

“He asked if you were coming.”

Lauren closed her eyes.

“What did you tell him?”

“The truth.”

Her anger surged.

“You had no right.”

Daniel almost laughed.

“You told your eight-year-old you were done with him.”

“I was angry.”

“You boarded a plane.”

“I had already paid for the trip!”

Silence.

The sentence sounded worse after leaving her mouth.

Lauren knew it.

Daniel knew it.

Then she said:

“Where’s Jason?”

Daniel answered:

“Ask Jason.”

Her stomach dropped.

“What did you do?”

“No.”

“What did you do?”

“I didn’t take your phone. I didn’t force you onto that plane. I didn’t make you say anything.”

Lauren looked around the hotel room.

“What is this?”

Daniel’s voice changed.

Not louder.

Colder.

“A record.”

She went still.

“A record of what?”

“Your choices.”

The call ended.

Lauren stared at the phone.

Then an email arrived.

FROM: Jason Blake

SUBJECT: COUNSEL

Lauren,

Do not contact me except through your attorney.

You were informed repeatedly not to move marital assets or use Ethan’s custody as leverage.

I have preserved all communications.

Jason

Lauren stopped breathing.

The word preserved terrified her.

She called him anyway.

Rejected.

Then another email.

FROM: CARTER FAMILY LAW GROUP

NOTICE OF PETITION FOR TEMPORARY CUSTODY AND FINANCIAL RESTRAINING ORDER.

Lauren sat down hard.

Daniel had filed.

Fast.

Too fast.

Which meant he had been preparing.

She understood.

Jason.

The hotel.

The trip.

The texts.

A setup.

Rage replaced panic.

She called her attorney, Monica Vale.

Monica answered on the third ring.

“Lauren, where are you?”

“Miami.”

A long pause.

“Why?”

Lauren did not answer.

Monica continued:

“Daniel filed emergency custody this morning. He attached a recording.”

Lauren felt cold.

“What recording?”

“Your hospital call.”

Her face emptied.

Daniel had recorded her saying:

I’m done with your sick kid.

Then Monica said:

“There are other materials.”

Lauren’s voice dropped.

“What other materials?”

“Messages with Jason. Financial discussions. Statements about using Ethan to pressure Daniel.”

Lauren stood abruptly.

“He entrapped me.”

Monica said:

“Maybe.”

“I want him arrested.”

“Being lied to by a private individual is not automatically entrapment.”

Lauren hated legal vocabulary when it refused to become revenge.

Then Monica added:

“There is a bigger problem.”

“What?”

“The Carter company account.”

Lauren’s anger vanished.

She had transferred $180,000 two weeks earlier into an account she controlled.

She told herself it was marital protection.

The account was now frozen.

Monica said:

“Daniel is alleging attempted dissipation.”

Lauren stared at the ocean through the glass.

“Can he take everything?”

“No.”

“Can he take Ethan?”

“No one ‘takes’ a child. The court decides temporary placement.”

“Don’t lecture me.”

“I’m telling you not to panic.”

Lauren laughed bitterly.

“I’m alone in Miami because my lover was working for my husband.”

Monica went silent.

Then asked:

“Did you sleep with him?”

Lauren froze.

“No.”

“Good.”

“Why?”

“Because this may be uglier emotionally than legally.”

Lauren sank onto the bed.

Then the hotel door opened.

For one wild second she thought Jason had returned.

It was hotel security.

“Mrs. Carter?”

“Yes?”

“We need to discuss the payment authorization on this room.”

Lauren stared.

The credit card had been canceled.

Daniel had not stranded her.

The card was a company travel card.

He had simply removed unauthorized access.

Lauren had enough personal money to leave.

But not enough to preserve the fantasy.

For the first time, Miami did not feel luxurious.

It felt like evidence.
