Chapter 11 - THE DAUGHTER ON THE STAND

Emma chose to testify.
The judge made clear that she was not choosing a parent.
“The trust belongs to you.”
Emma nodded.
Ethan’s lawyer asked about Laura’s control during rehabilitation.
“Did she choose your school schedule?”
“Yes.”
“Your therapy?”
“Yes.”
“Did she sometimes say your father was too tired to see you?”
“Yes.”
Laura closed her eyes.
Necessary decisions.
Still wounds.
“Did you sometimes feel Laura wanted to be your mother whether you wanted that or not?”
Emma looked at Laura.
“Sometimes.”
The answer hurt.
Then Naomi questioned her.
“Did Laura ever require you to call her Mom?”
“No.”
“Did she take money from you?”
“Not that I know.”
“Why did you send her the videos?”
Emma looked at Ethan.
“Because Dad showed me records that made it look like she stole money. Then I found videos where he talked about making me stop trusting her.”
The courtroom shifted.
Emma looked directly at Ethan.
“Why?”
He breathed slowly.
“Because I believed Laura would never release control voluntarily.”
“Over the trust?”
“Over us.”
Laura stared.
There it was.
He genuinely believed it.
Then Naomi played the clip.
Only if Emma still trusts her.
Ethan looked at Charles’s empty seat.
Emma started crying.
“You planned me too.”
Ethan’s face broke for the first time.
“I was trying to get my life back.”
Emma whispered:
“I was part of your life.”
Silence.
The judge ended testimony.
Outside court, Ethan approached Laura.
“You think you understand what it felt like to be trapped in that chair.”
“No,” Laura said. “I understand what it felt like to love the man in it.”
He looked away.
Then Naomi arrived with a forensic update.
The altered brake-warning login had been traced to a dealership terminal.
Security footage showed a man using Margaret’s credentials.
Ethan saw the still image.
His face went pale.
Laura noticed.
“You know him.”
May you like
Ethan said nothing.
And that silence told her the accident had a history he had never shared.
